Week 6 - Exponential

This document introduces exponential functions, equations, and inequalities. It defines exponential expressions as expressions of the form where b > 0 and b ≠ 1. Exponential functions are defined as functions of the form f(x) = bx, where b > 0 and b ≠ 1. Exponential equations are equations involving exponential expressions, and exponential inequalities are inequalities involving exponential expressions. The document provides examples and teaches how to determine if a given expression is an exponential function, equation, or inequality. It also covers solving exponential equations and inequalities using properties of exponents and the one-to-one property of exponential functions. Finally, it demonstrates how to graph exponential functions by constructing tables of values and plotting points.

Solution: We can write both side with 2 as the base.

SOLVING EXPONENTIAL EQUATION
Example. Solve the equation

Solution: We can write both side with 3 as the base.

SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITY
If b>1, then the exponential function y = bx is
increasing for all x. This means that b < b if and
x y

only if x < y. (If the base is greater than 1, then the

inequality is retained)

If 0 <b<1, then the exponential function y = bx is

decreasing for all x. this means that b > b if and
x y

only if x< y. (If the base is less than 1, then the

inequality is reversed)
SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITY

Example. Solve the inequality .

Solution. Both 9 and 3 can be written using 3 as the base.

Since the base is 3 > 1, the inequality is retained.

Thus, the solution set is (3,+∞).

SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITY
Example. Solve the inequality .

Solution. Both 9 and 3 can be written using 3 as the base.

Since the base is 3 > 1, the inequality is retained

same as

Thus, the solution set is (4,+∞).

SOLVING EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITY
Example. Solve the inequality .

Solution. We can write both side with () as the base.

Since the base is < 1, the inequality is reversed.

same as 1

Thus, the solution set is ,+∞).
