LIMITS OF EXPONENTIAL, LOGARITHMIC AND
TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION
MELC: The learner computes the limits of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions using
tables of values and graphs of the function. (STEM_BC11LC-IIIb-1)
sin t 1−cos t et −1
The learner illustrates limits involving the expressions , and and using table
t t t
of values. (STEM_BC11LC-IIIb-2)
Instructional Objectives: At the end of the lessons, the learner is able to:
a. Computes the limits of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions using: tables of values and
graphs of the function.
sin t 1−cos t et −1
b. illustrates limits involving the expressions , and using table of values.
t t t
Things to Remember:
An exponential function is a function in which the exponent of the expression is a variable. It is of
the form f ( x )=bx
Where: b=¿ any real number such that b> 0 and b ≠ 1 ,
x=¿ any real number
Limits of Exponential Function
1. If b> 1
x x
a. lim b =+∞
x→+∞
b. lim b =0
x→−∞
2. If 0< b<1
a . lim b x =0 b. lim b x =+ ∞
x →+∞ x→−∞
The exponential function with base e is frequently used in advanced mathematics. The natural
exponential function is a function of the form f ( x )=e x, where e is an irrational number equivalent to
2.718281
The inverse of y=b x which is x=b y is also a function. The logarithmic function y=log b x is
equivalent to x=b y. Its domain (0 , ∞ ) and its range is (−∞ , ∞ ).
sin x 1−cos x
The Value of lim and lim
x →0 x x →0 x
sin x 1−cos x
For all x in the domain lim and lim ,
x →0 x x →0 x
sin x 1−cos x
lim =1 lim =0
x →0 x x →0 x
Illustrative Examples:

Solution: Let x take on the values −2 ,−1 , 0 , 1, 2 , 35 , 7∧9. Then, for each x, find the
corresponding values of f ( x) .

2. Find the x→−∞
Solution: looking at limits of Exponential Function Use b> 1, and since x →−∞, the function
x
approaches 0. lim 2 =0
x→−∞
Solution: looking at limits of Natural Exponential Function Use d, and since x →−∞, the
−x
function approaches positive infinity. lim 5 =+ ∞
