GE 8 – ARTS APPRECIATION
1ST SEMESTER, SY 2020-2021

COURSE TITLE: Arts Appreciation COURSE NO.: GE 8

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Art Appreciation is a three-unit course that develops students’ ability to appreciate, analyze, and
critique works of art. Through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches, this course equips students with a
broad knowledge of the practical, historical, philosophical and social relevance of the arts in order to none
students’ ability to articulate their understanding of the arts.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Characterize artistic expression based on personal experiences with art;
2. Differentiate content from subject;
3. Classify artworks according to subject;
4. Analyze how artists present their subject in relation to the real subject;
5. Characterize sources and kinds of art;
6. Identify the medium in various forms of art, viz., visual, auditory, and combined arts;
7. Define an artist’s or artisan’s medium and technique;
8. Define the role of managers, curators, buyers, collectors, art dealers in the art world;
9. Differentiate between artist’s and artisan approach/ technique toward a particular medium;
10. Understand that the artisan’s work is an end in itself and artist’s work is a means to an end;
11. Identify national and GAMABA artist’s notable works and their contribution to society;
12. Identify the elements of art;
13. Analyze the various elements present in visual, auditory, and combined arts;
14. Determine dominant elements used in hybrid or modified art expression;
15. Determine the factors influencing artists such as distortion, transformation, appropriation in an
experimental or hybrid art expression;
16. Identify the principles of design;
17. Define and translate principles of design in an artwork;
18. Create an artwork depicting the various principles of design;
19. Analyze the various elements present in the visual, auditory and combined arts;
20. Determine dominant elements used in hybrid or modified art expressions;
21. Determine the factors influencing artists such as distortion, transformation, appropriation in an hybrid
art expression;
22. Identify the principles of design;
23. Define and translate principles of design in an artwork;
24. Create an artwork depicting the various principles of design;
25. Identify various planes in art;
26. Categorize and organize information from different sources;
27. Identify the underlying history, philosophy of the era or movements;
28. Classify the various art movements by citing their important characteristics such as historical, socio-
political and prevalent artists, art;
29. Discuss the concept of “soulmaking”;
30. Develop student’s artistic potentials through soulmaking;
31. Enhance students’ sensitivity and awareness toward their environment; and
32. Extend to the immediate community the students art works as a form of service learning.

Final Grade = 1/3 of Midterm Grade + 2/3 of Final Term Grade

A. Attendance
1. Grace period is five (5) minutes.
2. If absent, must send an excuse letter the following meeting thru messenger. The letter must be signed
by a parent or guardian and accompanied by parent’s/guardian’s valid ID.
B. Attire
1. Wear clean and appropriate clothing.
C. Attitude
1. Ask politely; converse calmly; listen attentively.
2. Avoid trash talk, curses and inappropriate gestures.
D. Cheating & Plagiarism
1. Always acknowledge your sources and references.
2. Avoid talking to seatmates / classmates during written tests.
