Engineering is a diverse field with many opportunities that can satisfy a student’s unique interests and

launch successful careers. Discovering all that engineering has to offer is an important part of the five-
year engineering (now four-year) at Technological Institute of the Philippines. All first-year students are
required to take a lecture style introduction to engineering course designed to teach students about the
different engineering majors. In presentations, students have the opportunity to explore fields of
engineering that may be new to them or not as widely known. They will be exposed to research
opportunities, career possibilities and coursework that will challenge and engage.

Engineering Orientation is designed to find out if the career or the path in civil engineering we chose is
for us. We will be able to know and understand engineering profession to map out an individualized
academic plan for our time at the university we are studying in and to get ready for the next years in
college. The course also intended to learn about what resources our school offers to help us on our
educational path. We can explore and participate in a group activity to learn what engineering is all
about and begin to network with our future colleagues.

In almost five months that we take Engineering Orientation as one of our major courses in Bachelor’s in
Civil Engineering, I can say that it does have a great impact on my understanding, perception, insight and
appreciation about our program which is Civil Engineering. We knew that this course is the first step on
our journey as a student of Technological Institute of the Philippines. It is an overwhelming yet so fun
and exciting opportunity to experience first-hand what is TIP and engineering is all about, as we
comprehend the TIP’s mission, vision and objectives, background, history, programs, curriculum
requirements, engineering and most especially civil engineering department.

Many people say that education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world. I
would like to start to the initials of Engineering where I was not sure about doing engineering, civil
engineering particularly, but as the days passed I started realizing the step that I took could not have
been better. When I went to Arlegui Campus for the first time, I was amazed and fascinated by the
laboratories of Civil Engineering, including when our professor in CE Orientation introduces us to real
world of the course I took in. And after that, my interest for the program started growing. I also became
aware how academically and professionally ready our school is, from its history to its objective, from its
core values to its core competencies, from ABET-accredited program to its facilities, and from College of
Engineering and Architecture to its Civil Engineering Department. Now,
