In this learning guide, we will be learning the concept of
physical fitness, its components and we will also try to relate the
implication of these two concepts in our daily living.

Ignite According to Villafuerte (2020), “Since the 7

World Health Organization (WHO) has
announced COVID-19 as a pandemic,
schools have adopted study-from-home
arrangements. However, staying at home
would not mean we need to park the entire
day on the couch in front of our laptops
and live in a sedentary lifestyle”.

With this insight, we should be more conscious of the

importance of being physically fit. So, what does being
physically fit mean?

What is Physical Fitness?

Cagas, et. al (2017) defines physical fitness as

“the body’s ability to function effectively and efficiently
without undue fatigue in work and in leisure activities, to
meet situations and to resist diseases from sedentary
lifestyles (p. 10).”

From the given definition, one can conclude that to be

considered physically fit, a person must possess the three
important aspects. These are:

1. ability to perform one’s task without getting tired easily;

2. enjoy leisure through some recreational activities; and
3. meeting emergencies.
In order to meet these three demands of being physically fit, one
should choose from the different physical fitness components to
improve healthy lifestyle.

Health-Related Fitness Components

According to LoveToKnow Corp (2018), “health-

related fitness involves exercise activities that we do in
order to try to improve our physical health and stay
healthy, particularly in the categories of cardiovascular
endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular
endurance, and body composition.”
The following are the Components of Health-Related Fitness
as defined by Cagas, et. Al (2017):

 Cardiovascular Endurance – “the ability of the heart,

blood vessels, and respiratory system to supply
nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and the ability of
the muscles to utilize fuel to allow sustained exercise. A
fit person can persist in physical activity for a relatively
long periods without undue stress” (p. 6)

 Muscular Strength – “the ability of the muscles to

extent an external force to lift a heavy weight. A fit
person can do work or play that involves exerting force
such as lifting or controlling one’s own body” (p. 6)

 Muscular Endurance – “the ability of the muscles to

exert force repeatedly. A fit person can repeat
movements for a long period without undue fatigue” (p.
6)

 Flexibility – “the range of motion available in a joint. It

is affected by muscle length, joint structure, and other
factors. A fit person can move the body joints through a
full range of motion in work and in play” (p. 6)

 Body Composition – “the relative percentage of

muscle, fat, bone, and other tissues that make up the
body. A fit person has a relatively low, but not too low,
percentage of body fat (body fatness)” (p. 6)

Skill-Related Fitness Components

According to TechPE.com (2020), the term fitness

“can be broken down into skill components.” The author
states that “it is important in performing the more technical
aspects of many sports, and it includes speed, reaction
time, agility, balance, coordination, and power.”

In his book Physical Education and Health Learner's

Materials, Cagas (2017) further discussed the following
Skill-Related Components:

 Speed - “the ability to perform a movement in a short

period of time. Sprinter and wide receivers in football
need good foot and leg speed” (p. 7)

 Reaction Time - “the time elapsed between stimulation

and the beginning of reaction to that stimulation.
Driving a racing car and starting a sprint race require
good reaction time” (p. 7)
 Agility – “the ability to rapidly and accurately change
the direction of the movement of the entire body in
space. Skiing and football are examples of activities that
require exceptional agility” (p. 7).

 Balance – “the maintenance of equilibrium while

stationary or while moving. Water skiing, performance
on the balance beam, and working as a riveter on a
high- rise building are activities that require exceptional
balance” (p.7).

 Coordination - the ability to use senses with the body

parts to perform motor tasks smoothly and accurately.
Juggling, hitting a tennis ball, and kicking a ball are
examples of activities requiring good coordination”
(p.7).

 Power – “the ability to transfer energy into force at fast

rate. Throwing the discus and putting the shot are
activities that require considerable power” (p. 7).

Using your own experience, give five specific examples of your

daily activities in each aspect of physical fitness. Beside each
activity, identify the fitness component/s that you need in order
to meet the demand of these activities.
