Luksong Tinik
Luksong tinik (“Jumping over thorns”) is a popular game in the
Philippines. It is originated in Cabanatuan City, Philippines., played by two
teams with equal numbers of players. Each team designate a leader, the
nanay (mother), while the rest of the players are called anak (children). The
players chosen to be nanay are usually the ones who can jump the highest.
The game involves players sitting on the ground and the other players
jumping over parts of their body.
Basically you just jump over peoples feet which is meant to be the tinik
which one foot/hand of the two players sitting on the ground will be added
after all players have jumped the first round.
Luksong tinik is a very popular game to Filipino children. It is a game
where one has to jump over the tinik and cross to the other side unscathed.
boys and girls lining up to jump. There are always 2 “thorns” who place feet
and hands alternatively to make the tinik higher. It gets higher and higher
up until one gets snagged in the thorns and replaces one of the taya.
The game develops your Leg Strength and Jumping Skills and Balance
to give equal weight. Leaping to spring or bound upward from ground with
one foot and landing on the opposite foot.
●There is no required equipment.
●The elements of health related-fitness and skill related-fitness required
balance and power.
●The purpose or goal of this game is to challenge the players jumping height.
The purpose of this game is also to have fun.
●The tip I can give is to jump higher by bend at your hips and knees, push
yourself to a standing position as you thrust your hips forward and lower
yourself into squat and then Jump as high as you can.

Mechanics of Luksong Tinik


A player must avoid hitting the piled hands with any part of his body or
clothing. The two mothers are expected to be high jumpers. The first to jump is
decided by the mothers by tossing a slipper. The mother whose team wins the toss
will have the first jump.

Levels in playing Luksong Tinik

Level 1 Both feet on the ground

Level 2 Each thorn uses a foot to increase the
height of the hurdle

Level 3 This is difficult for the horns tool. They


must be very strong to keep this up.

HEALTH RELATED-FITNESS (HRF)


One’s ability to perform daily activities with vigor and free from
premature Hypo-kinetic diseases.
Hypo-Kinetic Diseases
Diseases that occur from a sedentary lifestyle such as type II
diabetes, stroke, heart attack, etc.

Five Components of Health related fitness


● Muscular Strength- One maximum force that can be exerted by a
muscle.
● Muscular endurance- The ability of a muscle to generate force over a
extended period.
● Flexibility- The ability of a joint to move through its full range of motion
● Body composition- Fat mass versus lean body, test include Body mass
index, bioelectrical impedance, skin calipers
Benefits of Muscular strength and Muscular endurance are:
●Increase in lean bodies ● Increase self-concept and
● Increase in metabolism esteem
● Protects joint from injuries ● Decreases blood pressure and
● Enhances posture high density lipids (HDL)
● Decreases risk of osteoporosis ● Increase athletic performance
● Increases self concept and esteem
Benefits of Flexibility
● Protects against injury ● Improves the transport of blood
● Improves posture and nutrients to tissue
● Reduces muscle soreness ● Enhances athletic performance

● Cardiovascular Endurance- The body’s ability to provide oxygen to
working muscles over an extended period of time, Test include pacer test,
one mile run.
● To increase cardio endurance, an individuals must work hard enough to
reach their target heart rate zone.
Benefits of having an ideal body weight.
● Reduces one’s risk of type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer and
gall stones.
Benefits of cardiovascular endurance
● Can add years to your life ● Decrease resting heart rate
● Avoid numerous health problem ● Lowers blood pressure
● Increases heart size and strength
● Increase cardiac output-amount of blood pumped per beat
Barriers to Physical Activity
Getting involve in physical activities can be attributed to personal and
environmental factor. A person may experience a variety of challenges along
the way. This hinders the person to be physically active, hence, referred to
as barriers.
Personal barriers- These barriers have reasons or own jurisdictions of their
activity that forms their attitude towards physical movement, letting them live
a sedentary life.
Environmental barriers- The environment in which we live has a great
influence on our level of physical activity.

Directions: Make your own actual game of Luksong Tinik. You will apply the motor skills
jumping, leaping and Health-related fitness (HRF) balancing, flexibility and coordination.
Here is the case of the levels being utilized to give you a thought of the game.
1. Level 1- The garter is being held by the post in lower leg closer to the ground.
2. Level 2- Knee high
3. Level 3- Round the height of their hips.

a. Jump with both knees crosswise over the garter for 1 minute.
b. Count the number of times without being tripped.
c. Take a video while performing your actual game.
d. Send it to your teacher through Messenger/ E-mail/ G drive.
