Comprehensive Approach. Pp. 41-45 Philippines: A WSS Senior High School Series

1) The document provides examples for solving rational inequalities, including setting up the inequality as an expression equal to zero, finding the values that make the numerator and denominator equal to zero, and determining the resulting solution intervals on a number line. 2) A pre-test with 5 examples of solving rational inequalities is given, along with the solutions. 3) A post-test with 5 additional rational inequalities to solve is provided at the end.

A. Pretest
Solve each of the following inequalities.

4−x
1.) >0
x +3
2 z−5
2.) ≤0
z−7
w2 +5 w−6
3.) ≥0
w−3
3 x +8
4.) <−2
x −1
4 u−3
5.) u≤
u

Example 1
x+ 1
Solve  ≤0.
x−5
numerator : x = −1 denominator : x = 5

Here is the number line for this inequality.

The solution for this inequality is, −1 ≤ x < 5 [−1,5)

Example 2
x2 + 4 x+ 3
Solve  >0
x−1
(x +1)( x +3)
>0
x−1
numerator : x = −1, x = −3 denominator : x = 1
The solution for this inequality is, −3 < x < −1 and 1 < x < ∞ (−3,−1) and(1,∞)
x2 −16
Example 3  Solve  = <0
x−1
(x−4)(x +4)
= <0
( x−1)2
numerator : x = −4, x = 4 denominator : x = 1

The solution for this inequality is, −4 < x < 1 and 1 < x < 4 (−4,1) and (1,4)
Example 4

(3 x+ 1)
Solve   ≥1
x+4
(3 x+ 1)
-1 ≥ 0
x+4
(3 x+ 1) x+ 4
- ≥0
x+4 x+ 4
3 x +1−x −4
≥0
x +4
2 x−3
≥0
x +4
3
