LEARNING COMPETENCY
The learner illustrates situations that involve the
following variations:
(a) direct; (b) inverse; (c) joint; (d) combined.
A. DIRECT VARIATION
“y varies directly as x”
“y is directly proportional to x” and
“y is proportional to x” may be translated mathematically
as 𝒚 = 𝒌𝒙, where k is the constant of variation.
The table below shows the points earned by a Grade 8 class for every number of
kilograms of wastepaper collected.

Directions: Write the following variation statement into mathematical
equation:
1. The cost C of fish varies directly as its weight w in kilograms.
𝑪 = 𝒌𝒘
2. An employee’s salary S varies directly as the number of days d he has worked.
𝑺 = 𝒌𝒅
3. The cost c varies directly as the number n of pencils.
𝒄 = 𝒌𝒏
B. INVERSE VARIATION
“y varies inversely as x”
“y is inversely proportional to x” and
