Music of the Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and the Visayas

Music from the highlands of Luzon is found to be unique in nature and characteristics.
People from these areas mostly pattered their music and their melodic contour in a nature where
they live in. They also practice their unique traditional belief, by relating to different occasions
such as life cycles. How they live their life like mostly agriculture, and the unique musical façade
during death rites.

Music of the cordillera has been categorized in various ways. It is Vocal, Instrumentals,
and combination of the two. It has also a unique characteristic because it accidentally followed
the pattern of musical notation called NEUMES which sung in only one syllable and is free in
meter. The neumes is a type of musical meter without time signature and this can be found in the
characteristic of music of the Cordillera. The other characteristics is MELISMATIC a type of
vocal passages with one syllable and sung against several note passages.

In this activity you will learn to appreciate the different vocal forms of the music of the
high lands of Luzon. The lesson is intended to introduce to you and describe the characteristics
of the different vocal music from the high lands after identifying them.

Directions/Instructions:
You will listen to the music entitled Salidummay, Oggayam, Hudhud, Gangsa ensemble
and Bamboo solo/ ensemble After listening you will be identifying the characteristics of this
music using the guide statements below entitled “Tell me your name”.

“Tell Me Your Name”

• My name is Gangsa Palook one of my characteristics in order for you to hear my sound is
to struck or beaten with a wooden mallet.
• My name is Gangsa Toppaya my characteristic is to trike your palm while I was rested
on your palm and you will hear my sound.

• My name is Melismatic I belong to vocal music of the highlands of Luzon and I
believed this is my best characteristic being in the family.
• My name is Free Meter I am also belonging to the family of vocal music from the
highlands of Luzon, playing music in the absence of meter and time signature is my
best characteristic.

Procedures:

Activity 1. “I HEAR YOU CORDILLERA”

Listen from both representative vocal music and instrumental music of Cordillera: Salidummay,
Oggayam, Hudhud ,Gangsa ensemble and Bamboo solo/ ensemble . After listening, write in the
numbers 1, 2, 3 the different vocal music of the highlands and in the numbers 4 and 5 write the
instrumental music of the highlands place it in the table provided below together with their
characteristics.

Activity 3. “FACSIMILE”

Imitate how people from the high land sing their vocal music or how they
played their instruments called gong. In the absence of gong, you can use
“PALANGGANA or KASEROLA” or anything that sounds like gong. You can
practice and perform it with your family.

Note: In the absence of video camera or phones, you can have actual performance.
