SECOND PART 4 - CONTROL UNIT AREA - ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS

4. CONTROL UNIT AREA – ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS

Analysis of the control units includes two types of activity:

1. diagnosis activity
2. programming and forms activity

4.1 ACCESS TO THE CONTROL UNIT AREA

For both activities, the first operation to be carried out is access to

the electronic control unit area according to the following proce-
dure:
– position on the Diagnosis Option Selection screen page
– select the CONTROL UNIT AREA key.
Selection of the CONTROL UNIT AREA key in the list of diagnosis
options permits entry to the analysis session, organized in three sec-
tions:
1. electrical functions – measurement environment in which
the connection diagrams of the systems controlled by an
dr
electronic control unit are displayed. Information regarding
the components of the connection diagram is available. To
af
use the Multimeter environment from the MODUS Station,
to make electrical measurements, this must be connected
via network with the IWT

on the vehicle under test, on which diagnosis can be carried out.
A tree-like system permits display of specific functions tied to a
given electronic system.

existence of a lower level list.

Fault identification procedure (communication active)

Faults are identified automatically by the instrument following activa-
tion of communication with the control unit. The fault display proce-
dure includes:

2. intermittent fault, i.e. not present at the time of diagnosis
but present in the fault memory: indicated in black
3. fault present/intermittent: indicated in red/black

FAULTS/REPAIR sheet
The MODUS station and the IWT use two different types of
FAULTS/REPAIR sheet which, although they have several elements in
common, must be examined separately.
The IWT is, according to its characteristics, a measurement instru-
ment: in this sheet, it provides not only indications but also a virtual
multimeter that makes it possible to measure the value concerned.
The MODUS station, on the other hand, is a measurement instru-
ment support (to which it adds various capabilities); therefore, to
make a measurement, connection with an instrument is required,
such as a multimeter connected to the specific adapter, or IWT
itself. The FAULTS/REPAIR sheet on the MODUS station therefore
provides only measurement indications.

4.7 EXAMPLE: EDC SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS WITH MODUS STATION

This section indicates, as example, the main operations required for

diagnosis of an EDC control unit. The vehicle on which the control
unit is installed is a Daily CityCamion.

Connections and link-ups required

Socket 5 of the articulated arm of the MODUS station is used (ref.
Part I – Chap. 3).
Before proceeding, carry out the following operations:
– connect the MODUS ISO cable to outlet 5 of the articulated
arm of the MODUS station (ref. Part I – Chap. 3, fig. 2.5)
– connect the other end of the ISO cable; the method used
varies according to vehicle ranges and models:
• on the Daily CityCamion (new generation), use adapter
99331043 and the centralized diagnosis outlet
• on all other ranges, use the direct centralized outlet in
the cab

4.8 ACTIVE DIAGNOSIS

The request to activate (or de-activate) a component connected to

an electronic system, by the operator, is known as active diagnosis. If
the component has been activated successfully the operator is cer-
tain that the ECU+wiring+compo-nent assembly is working cor-
rectly. The active diagnosis diagnostic function provided by the
MODUS system may therefore be useful for checking of correct
functioning of the actuators (solenoid valves, valves, leds, relays,
etc.).
The active diagnosis function can be accessed in two ways: Before star ting diagnosis, it is ad-
1. from the Control Unit Diagnosis environment select the visable to check and to comply

tions.
2. from the Electronic Systems screen page select the icon cor-
responding to active diagnosis of the control unit under test
in the SYSTEM NAME active area (possibly after expanding
the +/– operator; ref. fig. 4.2)
The Active Diagnosis screen page shows the actuators affected by
the diagnosis path: when the icon of a component is selected, the
system prepares to perform an activation cycle of the component.

A test can be run only if communication with the control unit is
active.
Communication with the control unit and therefore running of the
test, can be interrupted at any time selecting the CROSS key.

Running of the tests

The MODUS system describes the actions required to carry out the
test: the user is guided by messages during each test. The results are
displayed in the screen page corresponding to the test in course.
Only if check-up mode is used, the system can record the result in a
file after running the test in sequence.
The end of the test is indicated by activation of the RESULTS key. The
test result summary can be viewed selecting the RESULTS key.
