PURPOSIVE

COMMUNICATION
(CHAPTER 3)
Prepared by: Patricia Nicole D. Caasi
BA Communication-1A
TASK 1: Cultural Iceberg
Culture has a lot of levels and dimensions. We tend to describe it based on
our own level of understanding. Not dwelling on it’s depth, just like an iceberg where
we can only see 10-15% of it’s surface. We tend to see culture just with it’s language, art,
traditions, religion and etc. However there are a lot to consider and dwell into same as
an iceberg that is hidden underneath.

• BELIEFS- how people view things in general.

• NORMS- behaviors and actions or people that are considered normal and not
unusual in their nature

• ROLES- society gives a person countless roles that they work towards and take on
as a part of their identity.

• CONCEPTS- ideas and general ways people think about. Endless list that talks
about the importance individuality along with the other abstract ideas.

• MYTHS- old stories that are not 100% true but contains a meta truth (truth that is
vital on reality but on a level beyond descriptive factual language)
TASK 1: Cultural Iceberg
These myths provide as links to the depths of the Cultural Iceberg because
down there language is not capable of describing the abstract nature of what we find.
At the tip we will discover the emotions and feelings that people generally have.
• VALUES- feelings people have towards the most important aspect of humanity.

• DESIRES- what people want or aspire to be.

• ASSUMPTIONS- how we react to situations that make our expectations

important.

• ATTITUDE- how we decide to think or feel about something.

• TASTE- things people like or dislike.

In conclusion, an Iceberg is a great metaphor for Culture. The top of the

Iceberg is observed easily based on the things people do in their behavior and
practices. Unlike the hidden depths of an Iceberg which culture can not be observed
quickly that would only be understood if you see it in a much more deeper sense.

possible way.

TASK 2: 10 Slang Terms used by Millenials as their

TASK 3: Essay about Cultural Generation Gap

Old versus Young: The Cultural Generation Gap

In recent years, Cultural Generation Gap has become more evident in the Philippine
setting because of the ever changing values, beliefs and behaviors. The distinction between
different generations have been evident in workplaces, social and political discourses.

The concept of the cultural generation gap encompasses phrases used to describe
the struggles and conflicts between older people and the youth in terms of culture. It is a concept
where a lot of studies show that there have been an increasing disparity among the older and
younger generation with regard to values, beliefs and behaviors.

Firstly, in terms of values– which are the feelings people have towards the most
important aspect of humanity. Millenials value their success and growth in their younger years.
They tend to financially invest a lot and prioritize their families well-being rather than romantic
relationships. They are risk takers that are more prone to social change when they think that it is
morally incorrect. While older generations in the Philippine setting, tend to be more traditional
with what they have grew up with. They value the morals and practices by their parents and
usually sticks with what is already there.
TASK 3: Essay about Cultural Generation Gap

Old versus Young: The Cultural Generation Gap

Another, in terms of beliefs– which means how people view things in general. Filipino
Millenials are perceived by elders as someone having a tenuous grip on morality. They are known
to be more open-minded with issues regarding pre-marital relations, sexual identity and the
concept of not having children in their 30s, they are observed to be as a little too sensitive when it
comes to reacting to socio-civic issues. Also, in terms of religious beliefs, older generations are
more religious than younger generations.

Next, with behavior- which is the attitude of people towards someone or something.
Older generations are more independent, entrepreneurial, resourceful, technologically adept and
flexible. One example is Generation X, where this generation easily switches between the use of
technology and traditional methods.

Meanwhile, Millenials are civic-oriented, Globally-aware, liberal, pragmatic and

compassionate. In a Filipino workplace, Millennials are highly driven and ambitious. They grew up
in a wired environment where they can get answers with just one click. They want instant
appreciation, quick growth and easy advancement in terms of work.
TASK 3: Essay about Cultural Generation Gap

Old versus Young: The Cultural Generation Gap

In conclusion, there are a lot of aspects of the cultural generation gap that can be
opened for discourse. Aspects that have affected and influenced different generations from the
oldest to the youngest. It is really evident that there is a big change in the three aspects
mentioned, but what is important is we respect each and everyone’s beliefs and values.

There might be a conflict between certain concepts and ideas with the different
generations. It may affect and can influence the succeeding years to come. It could be basis for
the incoming generations. So, what we need to remember is to give help one another grow as
time passes by.

Moreover, we can’t say that our generation is the best among the rest. Because for
me, every generation have their own achievements and failure. We only differ from the time that
we were born and what culture and behavior we were aware with. But we are all the same, in
terms if thriving to have the best values that we would bring for the rest of our lives.
