1.1. Referred by: Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit (VFU) through
Parirenyatwa Annexe.
1.2. Reasons for Referral: To determine cognitive function; for reported sexual abuse
1.3. Referral Details: A**, a 16year old girl was brought for a psycho-educational
assessment by her aunt (her mother’s brother’s wife) and a female police woman (VFU
Budiriro) following the advice from the Annexe department that was made on the basis of
observations that she had been sexually abused. The purpose of the assessment is to
determine her mental age and suggest intervention programs that are appropriate.

2.1: Other Information:
 The aunt reported that A** was born as a fraternal twin and both A**’s parents are
late.
 Her father died soon after their birth and her mother later passed on when the twins
were 3 years old.
 They began to stay with their maternal grandmother, aunt and uncle. Her twin brother
will soon complete his ‘O’ level.
 A** and the twin are in custody of their maternal grandmother.
 Her maternal aunt took the children from the grandmother because of old age and that
is when the mother’s sister’s requested to stay with A** in Harare in August 2014.
 The aunt stated that she and A**’s uncle are farmers hence managed to send the other
twin to school on the grounds he is performing better.
 The aunt wanted unpaid child labour.
2.2 Educational History
The aunt reported that A** attended school from ECD up to Grade 2 period 2003-2006 at
Kakora Primary School in Chiweshe ,Mashonaland Central Province. She dropped school
because of her lack of interest towards school and she was not performing well.
2.3 Developmental History

The aunt could not give full development history since the child was staying with the
grandmother from the death of their parents. The aunt reported that A**’s mother had a
normal delivery but A** and the twins were born prematurely. A** had delayed development
milestones.
2.4 Medical and Health History
The medical report indicated that A** was diagnosed with gonorrhoea a sexually transmitted
infection (STI) on 12th of March 2014 and received treatment.

5.1 Initial Interview to the Guardian
An interview with the aunt revealed the following
 The children had a normal delivery though were born prematurely.

 A** grew up in a rural environment and did not attend formal school hence was
taught housework.
 Since the death of her mother, A** has been under the guardian of the grandmother.
 Following her drop out from school A** had been staying at home helping with the
household chores.
 In August 2014, A** left Chiweshe for Harare upon her mother’s sister’s young sister
request for a holiday. Her aunt wanted to use her for domestic work since she was not
formally educated or employed.
 During her stay in Harare that is when she saw her boyfriend O** and had sexual
intercourse several times and acquired gonorrhoea an STI.
 The aunt noticed changes in appetite as A** was not eating properly when she
returned from Harare were she was staying with the mother’s little sister.
 She was also walking in an awkward manner, sleeping a lot and avoiding meals.
 The aunt asked what was the matter and if she (A**) was ill.
 The aunt went back to Harare with A** and confronted O**’s parents who denied the
allegations and they reported the matter to the police.
5.2 Interview to the Adolescent

An interview with A** revealed the following
 A** dropped out of school because she felt it was not interesting her and was not
coping up with the school work.
 She stayed home doing house work and field work with her grandmother.
 In August 2014, her mother’s sister asked her to come and live with her for a holiday
since she was bored staying in the rural area.
 She came to Budiriro, Harare to stay with her aunt who is a clothes vendor. She was
helping the aunt with minding a child who was attending pre-school.
 She reported that she was staying alone in the house whilst her aunt and uncle went to
work.
 Every day at 4pm during the week days she would go pick up the aunt’s child at
creche and along this errand she met O** S** and their acquantainces began.
 On a particular day, the aunt’s husband asked her to go and get a hair-cut and she met
O** on her way back .O** asked A** why she got a hair-cut without his permission
since she was his woman and intended to marry her.
 From this day a love relationship developed between the two of her and O** would
delay A** on her to pick the child from creche and would lure her in a house that was
still being built and had sexual intercourse with her several occassions.
 Because of this, instead of 4pm, she would pick the child at 5pm.
 At one time A** asked O** to formalise their relationship and this did not go well
with O** and he began to avoid meeting up with her.
 This upset A** and in February 2015, she asked her mother’s sister that she wants to
return to the rural areas because she had missed her family.
 The aunt did not notice any anomaly and A** also did not disclose anything to the
aunt.
 When she went to the rural areas the aunt there noticed change in behaviour and
bought her back to town and went with her to O**’s parents intending to marry her
off to O**.
 O** parents denied that their son had either a relationship nor even sexual encounter
with her since they labelled her a mentally unstable person.
 She indicated that she wanted to get married to O** as he promised.
 Having failed to agree with O**’s parents A**’s aunt reported to the police.
5.3 Observations
 A** narrated events coherently.

 She answered to questions and gave the needed information.
 During the narration she expressed emotions.
 A** indicated that she has social maturity to appreciate and be sensitive to adult
privacy and thus got into a compromising relationship that resulted in this sexually
transmitted infection.
5.4 Psycho-Educational Assessment
5.4.0: Tests of Literacy and Numeracy Level
 On a test of basic arithmetic, Anna did not demonstrate basic grasp of early numeracy.
 Graded Word Reading - she did not read any word correctly which suggested she did
not acquire basic reading during her enrolled in school
 Goodenough-Harris Draw-a-Person Test is a cognitive test used to measure
intellectual maturity. On this she performed below average intellectual level.
 Overall, Psycho-educational assessment revealed that , A*** cognitive function level
is significantly below her chronological age and that she did not acquire basic reading
numeracy competencies during her 2 years of ECD and 2 years of formal schooling.
6. Conclusion
Under the circumstances outlined above, it is concluded that A*** is a 16years 8months
adolescent of below average intellectual ability but able to comprehend basic social concepts
and follow practical routines.
7. Recommendation (including IEP guidelines)

 In the view of the above, it is therefore recommended that A*** should be facilitated
to a school with a viable access non formal educational programme where she can
benefit from functional literacy, numeracy and life skills training.
 She would also benefit from practically oriented skills training for her livelihood.
 The family needs to urgently identify a Youth Friendly Health Facility appropriate
for her to benefit from simplified reproduction health empowerment for her improved
life skills and sexually awareness of related competencies
