1. LEARNER’S DETAILS
1.1. Referred by: Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit (VFU) through
Parirenyatwa Annexe.
1.2. Reasons for Referral: To determine cognitive function; for reported sexual abuse
1.3. Referral Details: A**, a 16year old girl was brought for a psycho-educational
assessment by her aunt (her mother’s brother’s wife) and a female police woman (VFU
Budiriro) following the advice from the Annexe department that was made on the basis of
observations that she had been sexually abused. The purpose of the assessment is to
determine her mental age and suggest intervention programs that are appropriate.

The aunt reported that A** was born as a fraternal twin and both A**’s parents are
late.
Her father died soon after their birth and her mother later passed on when the twins
were 3 years old.
They began to stay with their maternal grandmother, aunt and uncle. Her twin brother
will soon complete his ‘O’ level.
A** and the twin are in custody of their maternal grandmother.
Her maternal aunt took the children from the grandmother because of old age and that
is when the mother’s sister’s requested to stay with A** in Harare in August 2014.
The aunt stated that she and A**’s uncle are farmers hence managed to send the other
twin to school on the grounds he is performing better.
The aunt wanted unpaid child labour.
The aunt reported that A** attended school from ECD up to Grade 2 period 2003-2006 at
Kakora Primary School in Chiweshe ,Mashonaland Central Province. She dropped school
because of her lack of interest towards school and she was not performing well.
The medical report indicated that A** was diagnosed with gonorrhoea a sexually transmitted
infection (STI) on 12th of March 2014 and received treatment.

Under the circumstances outlined above, it is concluded that A*** is a 16years 8months
adolescent of below average intellectual ability but able to comprehend basic social concepts
and follow practical routines.
