A vacuum pump is used to drain a flooded

mine shaft of 40°C water. The pump is

incapable of lifting the water higher than 9.5m.
What is the atmospheric pressure?

Solution:

The vapor pressure of water Pv at 40°C is 7.4 kPa

Pv is also called the saturation pressure Psat and is
listed in thermodynamics tables as a function of
saturation temperature.

𝑃𝑎 = 𝑃𝑣 + 𝜌𝑔ℎ where:
𝑘𝑔 𝑚 𝑘𝑔 𝑁.𝑠 2 1 𝑁
𝜌𝑔ℎ = 𝑚3
∗ 𝑠2 ∗𝑚 = 𝑚.𝑠 2
= 𝑚
∗ 𝑚.𝑠2 = 𝑚2 = 𝑃𝑎

𝑃𝑎
= 𝑘𝑃𝑎
1000
𝑃𝑎 = 7.4 + (1000 ∗ 9.81 ∗ 9.5)/1000

𝑃𝑎 = 7.4 + 93.2 = 100.6 𝑘𝑃𝑎
