6
LESSON

Today, we are going to learn how to write a paragraph showing

comparison and contrast of ideas.

Comparing and contrasting are ways in writing to create meaningful

ideas by comparing two things of its similarities or differences. It is often used
as an important strategy in making essay assignments, journals, and
important decisions you have to make.

In writing a paragraph, your goal is to convey information clearly and

concisely. In doing so, you need to use transition words. These transition
words help you to achieve these goals by establishing logical connections
between sentences, and paragraphs.

Transition Words in Comparing and Contrasting Ideas

1. Transitional words to show similarities like (also, as well as, both,

comparatively, in the same way, in addition, just as, like, most
important, similarly, the same as, too)
2. Transition words to show differences like although, besides, but,
compared with, conversely, differ, even though, furthermore, however,
in contrast to, instead, less than, more than, nevertheless,
notwithstanding, on the other hand, otherwise, rather than,
regardless, though, unless, unlike, while, and yet).

These transitional words are used to make a paragraph with comparing

and contrasting ideas. We can make a paragraph based on the Venn diagram.
Venn diagram is overlapping circles. The right and left side of the circles are
their differences and the middle circle which they overlap are their things in
common or similarities.

7
1. In what ways are John and Peter similar?

2. In what ways are John and Peter different?

Here is the paragraph based on the diagram.

John and Peter

Both John and Peter are amazing twins. They have black hair, brown
skin. They are both tall and handsome. They like sports and reading books.
It seems that John and Peter are the same but they are differences between
them. John is kind and honest. On the other hand, Peter is sincere and loving.
John likes to wear glasses while Peter likes to wear headphones. John wears
glasses because he loves to play basketball while Peter loves dancing. Once
you get to know John and Peter, it is easy to tell them apart.

Guided Practice
Make a paragraph with contrasting and comparing ideas based on the
Venn diagram.

8
Basketball vs. Soccer

Basketball and soccer are played with a round ball. They both provide
a ton of cardiovascular exercise such as running, so if you want to get in
shape these are the sports to play. A referee judges each game. When a player
breaks the rules he or she is called for a foul. A soccer player receives a red
or yellow card and a basketball player is called for a foul. Finally, a score is
kept in each game. The team with the highest score wins.

Even though basketball and soccer are similar, differences do exist.

Even though an athlete dribbles the ball in both sports, a basketball player
uses his hands and a soccer player uses his feet. Usually, soccer is played
outside on a large field and basketball is played indoors on a court made out
of wood. Basketball is played with 5 players and soccer has 11. Lastly,
basketball has four quarters and soccer has two halves. In conclusion, both
sports are fun and exciting to play. Each one offers exercise and
competitiveness. Also, they are unique in their own way.
