OMICRON PTL Manufacturer Relay Model PTT User Manual

1. General
This user manual describes details of testing Siemens 7SJ45/7SJ46 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: Siemens
Model: 7SJ45 and 7SJ46

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 2.40 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
• Control Center
• Ramping
• State Sequencer
• Overcurrent

Any CMC test set can be used with this Protection Test Template.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a Siemens 7SJ45 or 7SJ46 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the
Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
• Phase-Overcurrent (DMT/IDMT) (three-phase supply)
• Earth Overcurrent (DMT/IDMT) (three-phase supply)

Not supported functions:

• Phase-Overcurrent (DMT/IDMT) (in case of a single-phase supply)
• Earth Overcurrent (DMT/IDMT) (in case of a single-phase supply)

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the Siemens 7SJ45/7SJ46 XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the front
plate with its DIP-switches.

6. Specific Protection Tests

To ensure the full functionality of the current-transformer supplied protection device 7SJ45, a minimum
current is needed, especially for trip values smaller than the nominal current. This circumstance and the
lacking start-contact of the 7SJ45 cause the tests, which are explained below.

6.1 Pick-up Test Phase (7SJ45)

With this test the value of the pick-up current is tested. To get a pick-up signal the three phase currents
are ramped and the pick-up value is evaluated. After the successful pick-up the second ramp tests the
reset of the pick-up signal and the drop-off ratio. The time gap dt between two steps need to be filled by
the user depending on the trip time of the trip current.

6.2 Pick-up Test Earth (7SJ45)

The full functionality of the protection device is ensured by a supply with half of the nominal current in the
healthy phases. The current in the faulty phase is ramped and evaluated. Depending on the setting of IE>
and IEp, the value of the currents in the healthy phases and the current in the faulty phase is calculated
with a script function. The faulty current is calculated with = − − .
The test procedure for this test is corresponding to the test procedure in chapter 6.1

6.3 Trip Time Test Earth (7SJ45)

As well as in the other tests the relay is supplied with the half of the nominal current in the healthy phases
to ensure its full functionality. The value of the faulty phase is calculated as shown as in 6.2 With the
following states the trip times are tested:

• Pre-Fault 1: Operation with half of the nominal current

• Fault 1: Fault A-N with current IFault1. No trip signal is expected.
• Reset of Disk/ Post-Fault 1: CB is OFF and the disk is reset
• Pre-Fault 2: Operation with half of the nominal current
• Fault 2: Fault A-N with current IFault2. A trip signal is expected.
• Reset of Disk/ Post-Fault 2: CB is OFF and the disk is reset
• Pre-Fault 3: Operation with half of the nominal current
• Fault 3: Fault A-N with current IFault3. A trip signal is expected.
• Reset of Disk/ Post-Fault 3: CB is OFF and the disk is reset

The trip times as well as the reset times are calculated depending on the settings of the test current and
the active characteristic and are evaluated with the appropriate tolerance.
Figure 2 shows the test points of the three fault states. The test earth-current for the single testing point is
calculated as shown below:
  + . !

 = ∗ (1 − )
100
  + . !

$ =  ∗ (1 + )

% = ∗ 2.
