Appendix 1: Article Critique Assignment

Marks allocated: 100 Marks
Due date for submission: Week 6 (10 articles) / 2nd week
Objective of the assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to help student to understand how research is conducted and
reported in related field of study. Student will need to read a peer-reviewed article (quantitative) from a scholarly journal.
You should limit your search to:

 Full text
 Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals
 Published in the past 5 years

How to do it:
Base on your area of interest, get TEN (10) articles that are published for the last five years and review the content using the
following guide. Submit the articles together with your report. The report should be short and precise while deliberating the required
information.
1. Does the article begin by identifying a specific problem area and provide conceptual definitions on key terms?

2. Does the article establish the importance of the problem area?

3. Does the article have a stated research question or problem?

4. Does the article indicate the basis for ‘factual statement’?

5. Does the literature have been critically reviewed?

3
6. Do the specific research purposes, questions, or hypothesis logically flow from the introductory material?

7. Is the article recent and cited current literature as well as relevant to your research topic?

8. Has the article distinguished between theory, research results, and opinion?

9. Has the article (base on the empirical evidences) has elaborately discuss and argue before developing the research
questions or hypotheses.

10. Is this an article that describes the collection of data, or does it describes other studies in which data were collected?

11. Was the article organized in a manner that was logical and easy to digest? What could have been done to further improve its
structure?

12. Did the article contain a section that outlined and reviewed studies that had previously been done on this topic? In what
ways was this previous literature relevant?

13. If the author explained procedures that were followed in the study, were they clear enough that you could repeat the work
and get similar results? What additional information would have been helpful or required?

14. If data were collected, could you describe how they were collected and how they were analyzed? Do you agree with what
was done? What additional things would you have completed?

15. Do you agree with the interpretation of the results? Why or why not?

16. Finally, reflect over the entire article. What is most important to you? What did you find most interesting? What do you think
are the strengths and weaknesses of this article? Will you remember this article in the future? Why or why not?

For example:
Author(s). (year of publication). Article title. Journal name, volume, number, pages.

4
First, summarize the article and then next explain and critique the article based on the following:
1. Does the article have a stated research question or problem; that is, could you determine the focus of the author(s) work?
Does the purpose clearly define?

2. Is this an article that describes the collection of data, or does it describes other studies in which data were collected?

3. Was the article organized in a manner that was logical and easy to digest? What could have been done to further improve its
structure?

4. Did the article contain a section that outlined and reviewed studies that had previously been done on this topic? In what
ways was this previous literature relevant?

5. If the author explained procedures that were followed in the study, were they clear enough that you could repeat the work
and get similar results? What additional information would have been helpful or required?

6. If data were collected, could you describe how they were collected and how they were analyzed? Do you agree with what
was done? What additional things would you have completed?

7. Do you agree with the interpretation of the results? Why or why not?

8. Finally, reflect over the entire article and offer your opinion on the value of the study. Will this study further our knowledge
base on the related area of study? What does it add to our knowledge of management/marketing/finance etc?

Formatting:
1. The assignment should be two to three pages long, typed, double spaced on an A4 paper.
2. Please ensure that proper APA referencing styles are adhered to.

Submission includes:
