What is wind? What causes it?

Moving air in the atmosphere is called wind.

Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth's surface by the
heat of the Sun. This is due to the earth's tilt and spherical shape
different regions of the Earth surface receive different amount of
heat.

How does an air current setup between two regions?

Air moving from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure

creates air current. The hot air being lighter than cold air expands
and rises up. The cool air moves from nearby region to occupy the
vacant space near the region of hot air. Hence, an air current sets up
and air begins to move from one place to another.

How does air pressure help to inflate a football?

When the air is confined in a container the molecules collide with

each other. However, the molecules located near the wall of the
container collide with the wall as well. The collisions of this
molecules exert a force on the area of the wall and thus exert a net
pressure on the walls of the container. This is the reason why a
balloon or a football inflates when we blow air into it.

List the factors affecting air pressure?

i. Altitude: The air pressure decreases as we move upward from the

surface of the earth as the number of air molecules get reduced at
higher altitude.
ii. Temperature: When the temperature increases, air expands, and
the air pressure decreases.
iii. Water vapour: When the humidity is high, the air pressure is less.
This is because moist air is less dense than the dry air.

Why does air pressure decrease in humid conditions?

When the humidity is high, the air pressure is less. This is because
most air is less dense than dry air due to which it exerts less air
pressure than dry air.

Why does high speed wind results in reduced pressure?

When wind blows with high speed, it also blows a large amount of
air from that region. As a quantity of air molecule get reduced, the
air pressure gets reduced at that region. Thus, the high-speed wind
causes reduced pressure.

How does moving air produce a lift?

When air blows over or below an object, the air pressure gets
reduced over or below the area of that object. As a result, a pressure
difference gets created between the two opposite sides of the object.
This pressure difference provides a lift and moves the object from
low pressure area to high pressure area.

Name the instrument used to measure

a. wind speed b. wind direction

Wind speed - anemometer

Wind direction- wind vane or weathervane

List four precautions to be taken during a thunderstorm.

•If you are inside house, do not stay close to the windows. Move
away from there for safety.
•Avoid using mobile phones during thunderstorms when outside.
•Do not take shelter under a tall and isolated tree.
•Do not use umbrella having metallic top or base as the metals are
good conductors of electricity.

Why does a cyclonic storm get weakened after reaching the land?

Cyclone reaches the land becomes comparatively weaker due to

several factors such as friction with land and shortage of moisture.

Write a short note on Tornado.

Twisting funnel of violently spinning wind with its narrow end

towards the land is called as a tornado. Tornadoes are quite small as
compared to cyclone, but its wind speed is very high. The funnel like
structure of tornado engulfs everything that comes in its way
including cars, buses trees, debris, huts or even small houses.
Tornadoes are short lived and do not move beyond 20 km.
