5: Resonance
To calculate the speed of sound in air using the resonant lengths of a closed air
column.
2. Place a tube inside (making the end in the water a closed end).
5. Raise it from the water until you hear a loud sound (resonance).
6. Measure the length of the air column. This is the resonant length (L1).
7. Repeat the procedure until you hear the second resonant length (L2).
1. Using the equations for the resonant lengths, calculate the wavelength (in
metres). Do this for both L1 and L2.

2. Using the universal wave equation (v = f λ) (v=fλ), calculate the speed of
sound in air using the frequency of the tuning fork (f = 1024 Hz) and the
wavelength calculated in Question 1.
4. Find the percent error for both your experimental speed of sound
calculations compared to the theoretical speed of sound in air. Use the
formula:
experimental value − theoretical value
percent error = × 100% percent error=experimental value − theoretical valuetheoretical value×100%
theoretical value
Write your own conclusion for the experiment based on the purpose of the lab and
your results.
