OBJECTIVE:
□ Students will gain knowledge about petroleum refining process and production of
petrochemical products
UNIT I 9
Origin, Formation and Evaluation of Crude Oil. Testing of Petroleum Products. Refining
of Petroleum – Atmospheric and Vaccum Distillation.

UNIT II 9
Cracking, Thermal Cracking, Vis-breaking, Catalytic Cracking (FCC), Hydro Cracking,
Coking and Air Blowing of Bitumen.

UNIT III 9
Treatment Techniques: Removal of Sulphur Compounds in all Petroleum Fractions to
improve performance, Solvent Treatment Processes, Dewaxing, Clay Treatment and
Hydrofining.

UNIT IV 9
Cracking of Naphtha and Feed stock gas for the production of Ethylene, Propylene,
Isobutylene and Butadiene. Production of Acetylene from Methane, Catalytic Reforming
of Petroleum Feed Stocks and Extraction of Aromatics.

UNIT V 9
Production of Petrochemicals like Dimethyl Terephathalate (DMT), Ethylene Glycol, Synthetic
Glycerine, Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), Acrylonitrile, Methyl Methacrylate (MMA),
Vinyl Acetate Monomer, Phthalic Anhydride, Maleic Anhydride, Phenol and Acetone,
Methanol, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Pentaerythritol and Production of Carbon Black.

TOTAL: 45 PERIODS
OUTCOMES:
□ Understand the classification, composition and testing methods of crude
petroleum / product to develop innovative refining process and develop quality
control and assurance techniques.
□ Apply the knowledge of treatment processes to develop the manufacture of
petroleum products.
