EPUT Assignment 1

Electric Drives & traction

1. What is braking of electric motors? What are the advantages and disadvantages
of electric braking over mechanical braking?

2. What is the requirement of starter in Induction motor? Explain auto

transformer starter in detail.

3. Write short note on speed control of D.C. shunt motor.

4. Write short note on Types of electric drives.

5. Describe with suitable diagrams the various methods of starting 3-phase

induction motor. Give relative merits and demerits of each method.

6. Briefly discuss various methods of controlling the speed of a 3-phase induction

motor. Draw speed-torque characteristics in each case.

7. Draw heating and cooling curves of a motor. Derive an expression for the
temperature rise of an electrical machine after t seconds from the instant of
switching on.

8. Define Crest speed, Average speed and schedule speed. Discuss the factors
effect the schedule speed.

9. Using simplified trapezoidal speed time curve, drive expression for the
maximum speed in km per hour in terms of acceleration, retardation, distance
between stops and actual time of run between stops.

10. The outside of a 12.5kw DC motor is equivalent to a cylinder of a 100cm

diameter and 140cm in length. The machine may be considered to be a
homogenous material weighting 650kg and of specific heat 700joules/kg per
degree centigrade. Assuming the outer cylindrical surface dissipates heat at
0.0012 watts per cm square per degree centigrade, estimate the thermal time
constant of the machine and its final temperature rise when operating on full
load with an efficiency of 85%.

11. A DC series motor with unsaturated magnetic circuit and negligible

resistance, when running at a certain speed on a given load, takes 50A at 500v.
If the load torque varies as the cube of the speed, find the resistance to be
inserted to reduce the speed by 50%.

12. A 220v, DC shunt motor running at its rated speed of 1200rpm is to be braked
by plugging the armature resistance is 0.1Ω and the rated efficiency of the
motor is 88%. Determine: (1) The resistance to be connected in series with
the armature to limit the initial braking current to twice the rated current, (2)
The initial braking torque, (3) The torque when the speed of the motor falls to
400rpm.

13. The speed-time curve of a train consists of: (1) Uniform acceleration of 6
km/hr/s for 25 sec, (2) Free running for 10 minutes, (3) Uniform declaration
of 6 km/hr/s to stop the train, (4) A stop of 5 seconds. Find the distance
between the stations, the average and the schedule speeds.

14. Write short note on various systems of track electrification.

15. Write short note on Tramways and trolley buses.

19. Determine of specific energy output using simplified speed curve-time.

20. Define dead weight, accelerating weight and adhesion weight.

21. Solve the Examples of J.B.Gupta.
