Methodology
Introductory 1. Routinely Activities
Activity 2. Checking of assignment
(___10__ minutes) 3. Giving house rules
Activity The teacher will give an activity to find out if the students really understood the previous
(___20__ minutes) lesson.

Direction: Classify the following random variables as discrete or continuous.

1. the number of defective computers produced by a manufacturer

2. the speed of car
3. the number of female athletes
4. the time needed to finish a test
5. the weight of sugar in a cup of coffee

Answers:

1. Discrete
2. Continuous
3. Discrete
4. Continuous
5. Continuous

Analysis After the presentation, ask the class to give their own understanding about random variable
(___5__ minutes) (discrete and continuous).

Abstraction The teacher will discuss that a variable is a characteristic or attributes that can assume
(___10__ minutes) different values. We use capital letters to denote or present a variable. In this lesson, we shall
discuss variables that are associated with probabilities, called random variables.

A random variable is a function that associates a real number to each element in the simple
space. It is a variable whose values are determined by chance.

A random variable is a discrete random variable if its set of possible outcome is countable.
Mostly, discrete random variables represent count data, such as the number of defective chairs
produced in a factory.

A random variable is a continuous random variable if it takes on values on a continuous

scale. Often, continuous random variables represent measured data, such as heights, weights,
and temperatures.

Application Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement from an urn containing 5 red balls and
(___5__ minutes) 6 blue balls. Let Z be the random variable representing the number of blue balls. Find the
values of a random variable Z. Complete the table below.

Possible Outcomes Value of the random variable Z ( number of

blue balls)
