Baby Cardigan Pattern

This garment consists of 5 rectangles that make up 2 sleeves, 2 fronts, and a back. We will
begin with the back section.

Cardigan Back
Chain 27 (31, 33, 35, 37).

Foundation Row: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook. Work 1 single crochet in
each chain stitch to the end -- 26 (30, 32, 34, 36) stitches. Turn work.

Row 1: Chain 1, work 1 single crochet in each stitch across row -- 26 (30, 32, 34, 36) stitches.
Turn work.

*Continue working Row 1 until your piece measures 8 (9, 10, 10.5, 11)” from beginning.

Fasten off last stitch.

Cardigan Fronts (make 2)

Chain 14 (16, 17, 18, 19).

Foundation Row: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook. Work 1 single crochet in
each chain stitch to the end -- 13 (15, 16, 17, 18) stitches. Turn work.

Row 1: Chain 1, work 1 single crochet in each stitch across row -- 13 (15, 16, 17, 18) stitches.
Turn work.

*Continue working Row 1 until your piece measures 8 (9, 10, 10.5, 11)” from beginning.

Fasten off last stitch. Make a second cardigan front piece in the same manner.

Sleeves (make 2)
Chain 22 (23, 27, 29, 30).

Foundation Row: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook. Work 1 single crochet in
each chain stitch to the end -- 20 (22, 26, 28, 29) stitches. Turn work.

Row 1: Chain 1, work 1 single crochet in each stitch across row -- 20 (22, 26, 28, 29) stitches.
Turn work.

*Continue working Row 1 until your piece measures 6.75 (7.5, 8.5, 9, 9.5)” from beginning.

Fasten off last stitch to prevent work from unraveling. Make a second sleeve piece in the same
manner.
Assembling the Cardigan
Single crochet stitches have no obvious wrong or right side, so don’t get distracted by trying to
determine which side is which.

What you need to do now is sew the shoulder seams together, sew the upper arm in place, and
then sew up the side of the garment and down the under arm to the wrist edge. Do this by
intuition or by following the steps below.

Step 1: Sew the shoulder seams

Lay the cardigan back and two fronts out on a hard surface. Arrange the pieces so that the short
side of the back piece rests against the short sides of the cardigan fronts.

With a tapestry needle threaded with your yarn, sew 1 (1.25, 1.25, 1.25, 1.5)” of where the
pieces meet on the right edge together to make a shoulder seam. Repeat on the left edge.

Step 2: Sew sleeve in place

Leave the pieces laid out exactly as they are. Take one of your sleeve pieces and arrange it so
the short edge meets the long side of the piece laid out. Make sure half the short end of the
sleeve is in front of the shoulder seam and half is behind it (so it’s centered next to the
shoulder). Sew in place. Repeat for second sleeve.

Step 3: Sew remaining seams

Now fold the garment in half making sure the seams are facing out so you can see them.

Sew up the side of the cardigan from the bottom to the armpit and then down the sleeve seam
toward the wrist edge. Repeat on other side.

Turn the garment right side out.

Finishing
To keep the collar laying flat you might want to tack it down. This step is optional.

Evenly space your buttons down one of the cardigan fronts and sew into place. If you worked
your crochet stitches at the gauge called for then you should find the buttons slip right through
the stitches eliminating the need for a button band.

For a smooth finished look, work single crochet stitches evenly space around the entire edge of
the sweater. Space stitches out at approximately 3 stitches per inch.
