This lesson presents sample texts from various disciplines that may be helpful in
understanding the differences between and among the languages used in academic texts. This includes
sample representative texts from medicine, law, literature, journalism, nutrition, and history. In
addition, the features of language used in academic texts will also be covered in this lesson.

Directions: Look for magazines, books or other reading materials available at home and create a
simple but creative portfolio with the size of half of an 8.5x13 bond paper (Horizontally cut). Then,
paste at least 5 examples of academic texts from various disciplines. Above each text, identify the
discipline which it represents. Below each text, write your answers to the following questions.
1. What does the text convey?
2. What words in the text are used exclusively in this discipline?
3. Does this text observe the features of the language in academic texts?

Activity 8.2: Let’s Check!


Directions: Underline the words or expressions that made the statement sound less academic. Then,
identify the feature of the language violated. Each item is equivalent to two (2) points.
