(a) Separable Differential Equations
If a differential equation can be written in the form
f  y  dy    x  dx

We say that variables are separable, y on the left hand side and x on the right hand side.
We get the solution by integrating both sides.
Example: Solve the differential equation 9 yy   4 x  0 .
Solution: By separating variables we have
9 ydy  4 xdx
Integrating both sides, we get
9 2 x2 y 2 c
2

y  2 x  c    c , where c  .
2 9 4 18
The solution represents a family of ellipses.
Example: Solve the differential equation y  1  y 2 .
Solution: By separating variables we have
dy
 dx
1 y2
Integrating both sides, we get
tan 1 y  x  c  y  tan  x  c 

Example: Solve the differential equation  yx 2  y  dy   xy 2  x  dx  0 .

Solution:  yx 2  y   
dy y dy x
 xy 2  x  0  2  2 dx
dx y 1 x 1

 log  y 2  1   log  x 2  1  c   y 2  1 x 2  1  c

Integrating both sides, we get
c
ln y   ln x  ln c  y 
x
Example: Solve the differential equation y   2 xy , with y  0   1 .

Solution: By separating variables we have

dy
 2 xdx
y
Integrating both sides, we get

ln y   x 2  c  y  e  x  c
2

Setting ec   c when y  0 , and ec  c when y  0 , and admitting also c  0 (which
gives the solution y  0 ), we get the general solution

y  ce  x
2

 y  0  1  c  1  y  e x
2

dy 
Example: Solve the differential equation x  cot y  0 , given y  where x  2 .
dx 4
dy dx
Solution: x  cot y  0  xdy   cot y dx  tan y dy  
dx x
dx
  tan y dy     log c  log sec y   log x  log c  log sec y  log x  log c
x
x
 log  log c  x  c cos y
cos y
 
On putting y  and x  2 we get 2  c cos  c  2  x  2 cos y .
