50 V. Find An Expression For: EEE-201 Circuits Theory I - Fall 2020 Homework #3

This document contains 8 homework problems about circuit analysis involving capacitors and inductors: 1) Find the voltage across a capacitor as a function of time and sketch the graph. 2) Find the voltage across and current through a capacitor connected to a battery through a resistor over time and sketch the graphs. 3) Calculate the time it takes for half the initial energy in a capacitor to dissipate through a resistor. 4) Find the voltage across a resistor over time in a circuit with a switch and sketch the graph. 5) Calculate the current through an inductor over time after a switch opens in another circuit. 6) Find the current over time before and after

EEE-201 Circuits Theory I - Fall 2020

Homework #3

1) The initial voltage across the capacitor shown in the circuit is vc(0+)=-50 V. Find an expression for
the voltage across the capacitor as a function of time, and sketch versus time.

2) A 4 μF capacitor with an initial voltage of v(0-)=2 V is connected to a 12-V battery through a resistor,
R= 5 kΩ at t = 0. Find the voltage across and current through the capacitor for t > 0 and sketch versus
time.

3) A 100 μF capacitor is initially charged to 1000 V. At t=0, it is connected to a 1 kΩ resistance. At what

time has 50 percent of the initial energy stored in the capacitance been dissipated in the
resistance?

4) In the circuit below, the switch was in position A for a long time prior to t=0. Find expressions for
vR(t) and sketch it to scale for -2 ≤ t ≤ 10 s.

5) The switch in the circuit below has been closed for a long time. At t = 0, the switch is opened.
Calculate i(t) for t > 0.

12 V 4Ω 2H

6) The circuit shown below was operating in steady state with the switch closed prior to t=0. Find i(t)
for t < 0 and for t ≥ 0.
7) The switch in circuit has been closed for a long time before opening at t=0. Find iL(t), vL(t) and i∆(t)
for t ≥0⁺.

8) The circuit provided below has been in DC steady state for a long time before t=0. The switch sw1
opens at t=0, and the second switch sw2 closes at t=0, as shown in the figure.
a) Calculate v0(t) for all t.
b) What is the energy stored at the inductor at t=0?
c) Sketch the v0(t) waveform across time.
