Sound Worksheet: Part One: Wave Facts

The document is a worksheet about sound waves and the Doppler effect. It contains two parts: Part One defines key terms like amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and pitch. It also describes how the type of medium affects sound waves. Part Two is a Doppler effect activity where students predict and observe how the pitch of a sound source changes as it moves towards and away from an observer. The activity shows that the pitch stays the same until the source passes the observer, then the pitch decreases if the source is moving away and increases if it is moving towards the observer, demonstrating the Doppler effect.

Sound Worksheet

Use the information in the lesson to answer the questions in Part One, then use the Doppler Effect
Activity to complete Part Two. You may use the lesson, your notes, and the activity, but all answers
must be in your own words.

Part One: Wave Facts

1. What type of waves can only travel through a medium?

Mechanical

2. What is pitch?

highness or lowness of sound

bass is low pitch, treble is a higher pitch

3. What is the relationship between amplitude and volume?

The amplitude of a sound wave determines its loudness or volume. A larger amplitude
means a louder sound, and a smaller amplitude means a softer sound.

4. How does the type of medium affect a sound wave?

The type of medium affects the sound wave speed. Sound waves travel faster in solids and
liquids. The density of the medium is the second thing that affects the sound waves

5. Describe the relationship between frequency and wavelength.

Frequency and wavelength have both direct and inverse relationships. For instance, if two
waves are traveling at the same speed, they are inversely related. The wave with shorter
wavelength will have a higher frequency while a longer wavelength will have a lower
frequency.

Part Two: Doppler Effect Activity

In this activity, you will examine sound waves as they are emitted from a moving source. Predict
what will happen to the sound waves when the sound source is in motion.

1. Record your prediction (hypothesis) as an “if then” statement. (For example: If you select the
GO button, then the train will move)
If the sound source is moving then the pitch of the sound will lower to the observer.
2. Select the boy icon. Select the lowest pitch by selecting the bottom music note located to the
bottom right of the lab activity. Select the GO button. What happened to the pitch of the
sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record your observations.

The pitch stayed the same until it passed the observer

3. Select the reset button on the lab activity. Select the boy icon. Select the middle note located
in the bottom right of the lab activity. Select the GO button. What happened to the pitch of the
sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record your observations.

It also stayed the same until it passed the observer then the pitch begin to decrease.

4. Select the reset button on the lab activity. Select the boy icon. Select the highest note
located in the bottom right of the lab activity. Select the GO button. What happened to the
pitch of the sound as the sound source moved past the observer? Record your observations.

It stayed the same until it passed the observer then the pitch decreased

5. Why did boy (the observer) hear the pitch of the sound change?

The boy her the pitch change because the origin of the sound is moving away from the observer.
But before the sound is moving towards the observer

What does this tell us about the frequency of the sound?

Support your conclusion based on results from the experiment and your knowledge of
sound waves.

6. Describe at least two ways that your understanding of the Doppler effect could be applied to
everyday life.

2 ways I can understand the Doppler Effect could be applied to everyday life, first way is
listening to airplane as it passes by you and the second way is when the ambulance siren is
passing by you .
