Please choose 3 (three) traditional tales from 3(three) different continents, e.g. Asia, Africa,
America. You can use this link to help you
https://www.surlalunefairytales.com/books.php
Write a good paper about the tales. You must include the following.
(1) summary of each story and explain the reason (s) why you chose them
(2) explanation on why they are comparable or worth comparing
(3) reflection
1. Cinderella (French)
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Cinderella. She was very kind to her stepmother and
sisters even she treated so bad. One day, the prince held a ball. Cinderella helped her sisters
prepare, because she couldn’t come. It’s because her stepmother didn’t allow her to go. But, after
they went to the party, a fairy godmother appeared and changed her clothes into a ball gown, also
help her to go there. Everyone was fascinated by her beauty, even the prince. When they danced
together, Cinderella shocked knowing that it was almost 12 pm o’clock, which meant she had to
back home. As she ran away, she lost a shoe. That’s why the prince searched around the
kingdom, to find the woman who fitted that shoe. Finally, he found Cinderella and when she
tried the shoe, the fairy godmother appeared and changed her rags into a beautiful gown. The
prince and Cinderella married and lived happily ever after.
Reason: I choose this story because this is the first fairy tale that I ever heard. Many lessons I can
get from this story. Like treat everyone in a good way, even if they don’t.
Hansel and Gretel (German)
A long time ago, lived brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel. Their family were very poor
and couldn’t afford to fed them. So that her parents left them in the woods. While they were
trying to find the way back home, they saw a cottage made of foods. They started to eat the
house, sadly the owner came out side. She was an old lady, who is a witch. She invited them to
go inside, fed them foods and tucked them in bed. During the night, she locked Hansel in a cage
and in the morning she made Gretel worked for her. She planned to ear both the brother and
sister, but Gretel was clever, she trapped her in the oven and burnt her. Hansel and Gretel could
leave the house.
Reason: I choose this story because I was wondering about Hansel and Gretel story. To be
honest, I never knew how is the story, I only knew the title. It’s quite shocking but that it is.
Aladdin and The Magic Lamp (Arab)
Aladdin was a poor boy who lived alone without his parents since he was a child. He only had a
friend named Abu, a monkey. Every day he stole something from the people to eat. One day, he
found a magic lamp which other person was looking for it. He rubbed the lamp and the genie
appeared. The genie said that he would grant him 3 wishes. Only three. He used the first one to
make the princess in that town interested on him but it was failed. He used the second chance for
another wish and come the last wish, he wanted to set free the genie. Evidently, the princess fell
in love with Aladdin without any magic in it, just the way Aladdin is and they married.
Reason: I choose Aladdin because in this story, there is my favorite part. That is when the
Aladdin make the genie free from his punishment. His punishment is to live in a lamp and
become a genie, only when someone use one of his wishes to set him free, he can be free.
Aladdin was the only one who did it. That was amazing I think.
2. Those three stories are comparable because those are from another country and background
culture. So, it has their own uniqueness and moral value.
3. Reflection
I really love reading short story like this, because it I don’t need long time to read it. Usually,
tales like this have easy vocabularies, so I understand the story very well without confusing the
meaning of each word that is unfamiliar. This kind of story can also cheer me up and bring my
innocence kid soul up. Many life lessons a so have taken from this story. Like in the first story is
be kind to other, even though the other people don’t do the same, in the second story, in my
opinion we have to be brave and never give up, last but not least in the Aladdin story, I can take
the lesson of the story is about the truly friendship.
