Self-Actualization
Lived up to his full potential by:

 Saving Kevin from Charles and returning her to her family

 Becoming a Senior Wilderness Explorer at the end of the film

Esteem

 Wanted the recognition of becoming a Senior Wilderness Explorer 

 Was able to steer the house out of the storm without Carl's help
 Achieved a difficult task

Belonging

 Russell felt a sense of camaraderie with his fellow Wilderness Explorers

 Felt liked by Kevin, who appeared to view Russell as her own child, based on how she
interacted with him

Safety

 After Carl's house was airborne, Russell felt safe only once he was allowed inside the
house and not stranded on the porch
 In Paradise Falls, he was able to feel safe because everyone was protecting him 
 Dug helped them escape Charles, Kevin lifted Russell and Carl up onto her back to
escape the dogs, and Carl rescued Russell from Charles

Physiological Needs
 The time when Carl and Ellie have a picnic together while talking about having a baby
 Ellie having her own clubhouse also exhibits physiological needs since it provides her
shelter
 When the tree damaged their house, and destroys a physiological need, therefore Ellie
and Carl must rebuild it

Safety Needs
 As young Carl wears his helmet and goggles as an amateur adventure explorer, he
portrays his sense of security to face the world
 Russel seeks safety by asking Carl to come into his house while in the air
 The GPS that Russel has provides temporary security for directions to South America

Belongingness and Love Needs


 Ellie gives Carl a promotional badge to her club, giving him a sense of belongingness
 After Carl broke his arm, while in his room, he received a balloon from Ellie which
portrays their friendship
 Doug finds belongingness with Carl when he finally accepts himself as his master

Esteem Needs
 Russel gains self-esteem when Carl gives him the Ellie badge, indicating that he has
accomplished a good deed
 Doug gains self-esteem when he finds Kevin and reports back to the other dogs
 When Doug fights with Alpha and puts him in the cone of shame, he feels proud of
himself and superior to the rest of the dogs

Self-Actualization
 When Carl leaves Ellie behind in his life and realizes that he must have his own
adventure, he demonstrates self-actualization
 Carl acts as a father figure to Russel by going to his Wilderness Explorer ceremony and
later watching cars go by while eating ice cream together
 When they were able to go through all the challenges and get back to the hometown of
Carl
 When they were able to reach the ceremony of Russel for accomplishing another task
