1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this document is to provide recommended guidelines for

defining Functional Specifications and Scope of Work for a Process Control
System (PCS) project. It is recommended that Project Teams use the appendices
of this document as a starting point in the definition of the Process Control
Systems required for their project. Items highlighted in “Red” color should be
filled in with information specific to the project.

1.2 Scope

The scope of this document is the definition of Functional Requirements and

Scope of Work for Process Control Systems referenced in the attached
appendices.

1.3 Intended Users

This document is intended to be used by Saudi Aramco Project Management

Teams (SAPMT) whom are working on projects which require Process Control
Systems.

1.4 Disclaimer

The use of this Best Practice does not relieve the engineer from his
responsibility or duty to confirm and verify the accuracy of any information
presented herein. The use of this information or material does not guarantee
results that will satisfy any applicable requirements of Saudi Aramco Standards.

3 General

Project specifications for Process Control Systems (PCS) should be developed in a

manner which separates the ‘Functional’ requirements from the actual Scope of Work
for the project. For a majority of projects, the functional requirements for the process
control system will not vary significantly. It is mainly quantities which will differ. By
separating general functional / technical requirements from project specific / Scope of
Work requirements; functional requirements which are generic and can be reused from
project-to-project can be developed. Process & Control Systems Department have
developed the generic functional requirements documents. These are contained in the

attached appendices. The main responsibility of the project team is to develop the
actual Scope of Work for the project.

The appendices of this document should be used as a ‘Go-By’ for developing the
project specific scope of work. This document along with the relevant generic
functional specifications document and Saudi Aramco standards shall serve as the basis
for procurement of the PCS.
