Ⅰ. Introduction to Scrubber System

● Scrubber System for Marine Use

The scrubber system for marine use is an exhaust gas cleaning system to reduce SOx emissions, which are

formed in a combustion process of marine diesel engine operated on heavy fuel oil. The scrubber systems

use seawater or chemically treated fresh water for removal Sox of exhaust gas in a recent survey it was

concluded that compared with lowering the fuel sulfur content marine scrubber system is more economically

superior.

● Scrubber Types
● Open-Loop Scrubber : The untreated seawater is sourced in and discharged out without recirculation.

● Closed-Loop Scrubber : Chemical is used to generate alkalinity. Chemically treated fresh water is cleaned

after scrubbing and recycled back to the system.

● Hybrid-Loop Scrubber : The hybrid system enables to operate in either open or closed mode, in order to

comply with required emission requirement.

Ⅱ. IMO SOx Regulations

● Current Emission (MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI Reg. 14)

● Global(Outside ECA) : 3.5% SOx
● ECA(Emission Control Area) : 0.1% SOx

● January 1. 2020 (MEPC, October, 2016)

● The global limit outside of ECAs shall be 0.5% S.

Ⅲ. Options for Compliance

● Comparison of Options

Solution Low-Sulphur Fuel Scrubber LNG / LPG

Reduce SOx
Method MGO, LSFO Using Seawater/ Liquefied Natural Gas
Sodium hydroxide

- High Safety - Use HSFO continuously. - No emission of NOx, SOx, PM

- Confirmed in - Reduce SOx (90%) - Reduce CO2 emission (20%)
Advantage
ECA application - Reduce PM (60~90%) - Low fuel cost
- Low investment

- High operating - High investment cost

cost - Weak infrastructure for
- Global supply bunkering LNG/LPG
- Space required for
system required - Loss of cargo area
Disadvantage installation in
Engine room
