ESSAY

Name of school- Govt Girls Senior Secondary School

Name of person contacted- Mrs. Nishat
Designation- TGT- Social Studies
Work experience- 27 years

I got in touch with Mrs. Nishat who has been teaching Social Studies to girl students of classes 9 to 12,
in her alma mater, Govt Girls Senior Secondary School, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. According to her,
students of govt schools always face issues when it comes to getting proper resources for education
and for teachers the challenges to educate them never seem to end. Yet it was manageable and her
school always witnessed a 100% pass percentage. However, since pandemic hit the nation and
classes shifted to an online mode, acquiring education as well as providing education has turned into a
nightmare for these girls of govt school.

Issues faced during offline mode of teaching-

Most of these girl students are the 1st learner in their family to have access to formal education.
Therefore, their parents do not understand the value of education and are not aware about the
opportunities that wait ahead for their child. They pull them out of school at an early age and get them
married so as to get done with their responsibilities. Parents do not want to educate their girls because
they feel they’ll get in touch with guys and bring dishonour to family’s reputation. Hence, as soon as
they get to know about any guy trying to being friendly with their daughter or following her after school,
they make her leave the school.

Mrs. Nishat recalls that there was a brilliant student and teachers felt she had the potential to crack
UPSC exams and had started her training in 11th class after usual school hours. These students cannot
afford private tuitions for doubt clearing or coaching for preparing for entrances. That girl got in touch
with a guy friend and her parents made her leave school. Now, it has been two years and she did not
even get a chance to complete her schooling and IAS’s dream never will turn into reality. This further
highlights the mindset of people which has not evolved/ adapted to modern world over the years due to
lack of guidance and education.

Parents are so used to free education that the ones who can even afford the examination fee for class
X and XII board exams are not willing to pay. Teachers pool in money and pay the fee for the ones who
are genuinely needy. In school, they get daily meals, have to wear uniforms, no textbook costs but in
college this is not the case. Students have to bear an added expense of clothes, stationery and food.
The monetary barrier prevents students from enrolling in colleges and hence the job opportunities
remain scarce.
Issues faced during online mode of teaching-
Teachers and students both do not have access to laptops and have to teach and study respectively
through mobile phones. Govt school students come from such a backdrop where they are not even
able to meet the basic necessities of life like two proper meals a day. Households with multiple school
going children are at a bigger disadvantage as parents can not even afford one smart phone and even
if they manage to arrange one phone then which child of theirs should have access to education and
attend classes still remains a problem.

Teachers had to purchase new phones as due to over usage, their prior phones got spoilt. This is an
added burden on the pockets of teachers who have not been receiving full salary for over a year now.
There are 70 students in a class, and it is not easy to maintain their data in terms of mobile number,
taking daily attendance, conducting tests, and correcting their answer sheets which they receive on
their phones.

She further mentioned that students are afraid that their work might get copied by others hence they
often end up texting their assignments on personal text to teachers rather than texting on the class
group. Which further adds to their workload of skimming data from multiple chats and saving in one
folder. Memory of phone gets full, or it even hangs. Data packages get exhausted and connectivity
issues constantly persist.

She ended the conversation by stating the line- “Bina hathyaar ke jung kaise jeete?” Govt schools
though have appointed them to improve the status of these children but they did not provide them
proper means to win the ongoing war of education system. Teachers and students should have been
provided smartphones along with Wi-Fi connectivity.

My take on this-
I believe there is a need for career counselling and guidance program for students as well as parents in
these schools. Both the parties need to know what scope they have in future and why education should
be a priority rather than getting married at an early age.

Board examination fees for these students should be either removed or reduced. Similarly, tuition
centers should be run for these students where they are provided free of cost extra assistance for
board exams as well as competitive exams. Government needs to allocate more funding for education
sector.

Government should provide smartphones to each individual student irrespective of the factor that some
students live in the same household. Teachers should be provided with laptops with cameras. Students
as well as teachers should be given a monthly allowance for data charges or Wi-Fi. Inaccessibility to
technology should not be a hindrance for these students that takes away their chance of education.

All the students who are able to secure marks to get admission in good colleges based on merit should
get a monthly allowance to sustain themselves in these colleges. Reduced fees is not the solution, for
Economically Weaker Section of society other costs attached to college life is still problematic.
