Process of Admission, discharge, transfer with utilization of

technology.
- they are using a software (Bizbox Ver 5.5), the hospital started using it October 2004.

- BizBox is designed with all the users in mind. Given that there are many stakeholders in this one single
application, careful consideration is given to address the needs of administrators, physicians, accountants,
medical staff and IT personnel. BizBox is one of the best hospital systems in the Philippines.

- One of its strength is "the full integration from front end transactions to backend accounting."
- BizBox is a complete turn-key HIS application. The scope of the system is extensive enough to satisfy the
requirements of doctors, medical and non-medical staff, accountants and administrators in one package.

2. Conducting requests of procedures, lab tests and
medication.
- In conducting request of procedures, lab tests and medication, they are using
software in encoding/ rendering the treatments. They also use Records in
every department, it is used by each staff to be signed if needed for the
reassuring that the rendered care is being done and for legal documentation
also. Phone lines are interconnected each every department, and can use
easily.

3. Process of carrying-out physicians orders.

- In carrying out physicians order, it is a nurse-physician communication. There is no
software being used yet. The nurse in just charting/recording/documenting all the
treatments being done to the patient. The physicians doing their rounds everyday &
updating the chart/records/documents for further assessment or treatments to be
done. Narrative charting/ or FDAR is what the nurse doing for the updates sake. If
ever theres a problem to the patient that the nurse couldn’t handle, they refer or call
the physicians attention through phoneline. Eventhough each station has a computer
the software being used is for rendering requests to lab, to CSSR (supplies), to
pharmacy and all of the charges to the patient.

4. How technologically-oriented/competent are the

personnel (accessibility, simplification of
reports)
- The Metropolitan is fully equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and a fully
automated diagnostic laboratory. Staffed by over 300 doctors in various specialties, this
institution prides itself in being a referral center for challenging cases in internal medicine,
endoscopy, and surgery, as well as in having centers of excellence for the fields of obstetrics and
gynecology, dermatology and physical rehabilitation.
- In the Emergency room they are fully equipped and very ready in case of emergency with high-
end equipments used.
- In terms of competency I can say that the hospital has it capabilities to handle patients well and
you will assure be in good term when you’re admitted of going there.
5. Utilization of computer technology in all aspects
of healthcare.

- Computer Technology really helps in all aspects using Healthcare information

system.
- Provides the umbrella framework to describe the comprehensive management of
health information across computerized systems and its secure exchange between
consumers, providers, government and quality entities, and insurers. Health
information technology (HIT) is in general increasingly viewed as the most promising
tool for improving the overall quality, safety and efficiency of the health delivery
system

- Improve health care quality;

- Prevent medical errors;
- Reduce health care costs;
- Increase administrative efficiencies
- Decrease paperwork; and
- Expand access to affordable care.

6. How updated & advanced are the equipments being

used (applications, features, reliability ease of
system use security, overall system)
- In terms of overall system in MMC ,is not that advanced because Bizbox Ver 5.5
(software been used), is just for rendering the accounts of the patients in terms of
charging (Billing & Collection, Inventory Mngt , Financial Accounting) them.
- But in terms of equipments they are equipped to handle each every case.

7. Emergency, preparedness & response

- An Emergency Department (ED), also known as Accident & Emergency (A&E),
Emergency Room (ER), Emergency Ward (EW), or Casualty Department is a medical
treatment facility, specialising in acute care of patients who present without prior
appointment, either by their own means or by ambulance. The emergency department is
usually found in a hospital or other primary care center.

Due to the unplanned nature of patient attendance, the department must provide
initial treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be
life-threatening and require immediate attention. In some countries, emergency
departments have become important entry points for those without other means of
access to medical care. The emergency departments of most hospitals operate 24 hours
a day, although staffing levels may be varied in an attempt to mirror patient volume.

 EMS (Ambulance) Coordination Center

 Resuscitation Area
 Major Trauma / Medical Areas
 Consultation Rooms
 Patient Waiting Area
 Minor Procedure Rooms
 Observation Units
 Injection Room
 Pediatrics Area
 Doctors Restroom

8. Conclusion / Implications
Computers are the excellent means for storage of patient related data. Big
hospitals employ computer systems to maintain patient records. It is often necessary to
maintain detailed records of the medical history of patients. Doctors often require the
information about a patient’s family history, physical ailments, already diagnosed
diseases and prescribed medicines. This information can be effectively stored in a
computer database.

Computers can keep track of prescriptions and billing information. They can be
used to store the information about the medicines prescribed to a patient as well as
those, which cannot be prescribed to him/her. Computers enable an efficient storage of
huge amounts of medical data.

Medicine comprises vast base of knowledge. Computer storage can serve as the
best means of housing this information. Medical journals, research and diagnosis papers,
important medical documents and reference books can best be stored in an electronic
format.

Many of the modern-day medical equipment have small, programmed

computers. Many of the medical appliances of today work on pre-programmed
instructions. The circuitry and logic in most of the medical equipment is basically a
computer. The functioning of hospital-bed beeping systems, emergency alarm systems,
X-ray machines and several such medical appliances is based on computer logic.

Computer software is used for diagnosis of diseases. It can be used for the
examination of internal organs of the body. Advanced computer-based systems are used
to examine delicate organs of the body. Some of the complex surgeries can be
performed with the aid of computers. The different types of monitoring equipment in
hospitals are often based on computer programming.

Computer networking enables quicker communication. Computers and Internet

have proved to be a boon in all the spheres of life. In the field of medicine, computers
allow for faster communication between a patient and a doctor. Doctors can collaborate
better over the Internet. Today, it is possible to obtain experts’ opinions within seconds
by means of the Internet. Medical professionals sitting on opposite sides of the globe can
communicate within minutes by means of the Internet. It is due to computer networking
technology that network communication has become easy. Medical practitioners can
discuss medical issues in medical forums. They can exchange images and messages in
seconds and derive conclusions speedily. They can seek advice and share knowledge in a
convenient manner over the Internet.

The importance of computers cannot be stressed enough as computer

technology has revolutionized the field of medicine.

9. Recommendations
- As a student, I saw some positive and negative assets of MMC in hospital
and software settings. First thing ,MMC is an institution with equipped enough
facilities to handle different kinds of patient/ people in terms of health condition and
their wellness too. All the department specifically Emergency Room is competent
enough as compared to other hospital. But in terms of Software application of the
hospital I am not quite impressed about it, because the concept of software is all
about the charges to the patient. Even though I know that the hospital is a Private
institution, I think that they should upgrade their software in a way that all of
department has an easy access to each patients record (specifically treatments,
orders, labs & charges)

10. Plan of Action

- It shows for the entrance
of the ER, down to the
some of areas like
Pediatrics, then the
records cabinet w/c is
color coded, then a sample
emergency sheet
application.
