Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member
bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75% of the
member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 10791-11 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 39, Machine
tools.
iii
ISO/WD 10791-11
0 Introduction
This International Standard is one of a series of parts of ISO 10791 concerned with methods of
testing machining centres.
Scope of ISO 10791 is to supply information as wide and comprehensive as possible on tests and
checks which can be carried out for comparison, acceptance, maintenance or any other purpose.
ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to the relevant parts of ISO 230, Test code for machine tools,
several families of tests for machining centres with horizontal or vertical spindle or universal heads of
different types, standing alone or to be integrated in flexible manufacturing systems. ISO 10791 also
establishes the tolerances corresponding to general purpose and normal accuracy machines.
A machining centre is a numerically controlled machine tool capable of carrying out two or more of
the operations of milling, boring, drilling and tapping on which tools can be changed automatically
from a magazine or similar storage unit in accordance with a machining program. Most machining
centres have facilities for automatically changing the direction in which the workpieces are presented
to the tool.
ISO 10791 is also applicable, totally or partially, to numerically controlled milling and boring
machines, when their configuration, components and movements are compatible with the tests
herein described.
ISO 10791 is divided into the following separate parts, which can be used together or alone in
function of the needs and agreements between supplier/manufacturer and user:
- Part 1 - Geometric tests for machines with horizontal spindle and with accessory heads
(horizontal Z-axis)
- Part 2 - Geometric tests for machines with vertical spindle or universal heads with
vertical primary rotary axis (vertical Z-axis)
- Part 3 - Geometric tests for machines with integral indexable or continuous universal
heads (vertical Z-axis)
- Part 9 - Evaluation of the operating times of tool change and pallet change

ISO/WD 10791-11
ISO 10791-11 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-5, the operating conditions for the test cycle to be
used during noise measurements intended to assess the noise emission of machining centres with
linear axes up to 2000 mm.
The purpose of ISO 10791-11 is to facilitate obtaining comparable test results on the noise emission
of similar machining centres. This enables the users to make comparisons and check the declared
noise specifications in private contracts, and to perform acceptance test in a uniform way.

3 Preliminary remarks
To apply ISO 10791-11, reference should be made to ISO 230-5 for consideration of the test
methods, measurement surface, measurement positions, corrections for both the acoustic
environment and background noise and the recommended accuracy of testing equipment.
When testing a machine, it is not always necessary or possible to carry out all the tests described in
ISO 10791. When the tests are required for acceptance purposes, it is up to the user to choose, in
agreement with the supplier/manufacturer, those tests relating to the components and/or the
properties of the machine which are of interest. These tests are to be clearly stated when ordering a
machine. The mere reference to ISO 10791 for the acceptance tests, without specifying the tests to
be carried out, and without agreement on the relevant expenses, cannot be considered as binding for
any contracting party.

ISO/WD 10791-11
The installation and mounting conditions shall be representative of the typical or normal use of the
machining centre. These conditions shall be the same for the determination of both sound power
levels and emission sound pressure levels at specified positions, and for declaration purposes.
The machine undergoing the test shall be placed on a reflecting (acoustically hard) plane. If the
machine is to be installed on special foundations or in a pit, the measurements shall be made in
these conditions, using the floor level outside the pit as a basis for the reference box and the
measurement positions.
All protective devices and acoustic guards supplied with the machine shall be fitted and in operation
during these tests.
5 Reference box
5.1 Machine
The reference box shall be the smallest hypothetical rectangular parallelepiped (i.e. rectangular box)
that encloses the whole machine, enveloping its movable components over their complete travel
ranges, including the parts of their travels used only for tool or pallet change.
If the travel of the X-axis is greater than 2000 mm, a portion of 2000 mm shall be selected for the
determination of the reference box. If a longer travel is required to move the column from one
working station to a second one, or for a pallet change, the corresponding operations (described in
the instructions N 10 and N 180 in 7.2) shall be neglected, and the machine shall be considered as
working on a single station or pallet, with the X-axis not exceeding 2000 mm.
Tool and pallet stores may occupy a large area outside the machine. In these cases, a part of the
store should be excluded from the reference box and the parts of the store to be included in the
reference box should be clearly specified. Guidance is given hereunder for the cases in which parts
of the stores not emitting noise are not fully included in the reference box of the machine.
For random position tool stores provided with tool changer, the reference box shall envelop the tool
changer including the tool in the waiting position. Shuttles, chains, carrousels or other movable
elements belonging to the tool store shall not move during the noise test.
For fixed position tool stores, the reference box shall include the store slots occupied by the tools
involved in the test cycle, with the store in the resting position (for movable stores). Motors or devices
emitting noise during the tool change operation may be left outside the surface. Their contribution to
the measurements made in the nearest positions may be neglected in general, due to the short
duration and the low level of their noise emission.
For random position pallet stores provided with pallet changer, the reference box shall envelop the
pallet changer including the pallet in the waiting position. Shuttles, chains, carrousels or other
movable elements belonging to the pallet store shall not move during the noise test.

For fixed position pallet stores, the reference box shall include the store slots occupied by the pallets
involved in the test cycle, with the store in the resting position (for movable stores). Motors or devices

to the measurements made in the nearest positions may be neglected in general, due to the short
duration and the low level of their noise emission.
6 Preliminary operations
In order to specify standard travels of the movable components during the noise test, the machining
volume shall be identified by means of the working travels of the three main coordinate axes,
excluding those parts of their travels used for tool change or pallet change only. In order to identify
the machining volume, it is therefore necessary to specify the following parameters:
the centre of the machining volume is then defined by the following parameters:
which correspond respectively to the mean values of the above pairs of parameters.
Movable components other than the three main coordinate axes, such as sliding spindles, quills or
rams, shall be maintained retracted.
If the machine can be fitted with universal accessory heads, they shall not be used.
If the machine is fitted with an integral universal head, the spindle shall be oriented in the position
allowing the shortest tool change time.
7 Operating conditions
This standard specifies simplified operating conditions not requiring cutting tools, coolant supply and
test pieces which would considerably increase the measurement uncertainty and reduce the
reproducibility. Nevertheless, preliminary experiences have shown that these conditions are
representative of the actual noise emission of machining centres. In effect, noise emissions, like
those generated by the cutting process and by the projection of chips and coolant against the
enclosures, are replaced in this test cycle by a larger use of rapid feed travels (which are noisy
functions) than in the normal working life of the machine.
The operating conditions specified in this clause proved to be easily reproducible and representative
of the noisiest operation in typical usage of machining centres.
These operating conditions are strictly the same for the determination of both sound power levels
and emission sound pressure levels at specified positions.

ISO/WD 10791-11
The three main coordinate axes shall be in the centre of the machining volume as defined in 6.1, i.e.
in the following positions:
Xmean, Ymean, and Zmean.
7.1.2 Tools
b) for random position tool stores with tool changer, one tool holder shall be ready in the
store slot closest to the tool changer and a second one in the next slot;
c) for fixed position tool stores with bi-directional search, one tool holder shall be ready in
the closest slot for the change and a second one in the next slot;
d) for fixed position tool stores with unidirectional search, one tool holder shall be ready in
the closest slot for the change and two others in the next slots.
7.1.3 Pallets
b) for random position pallet stores with pallet changer, one empty pallet shall be ready in
the waiting position of the pallet changer;
c) for fixed position pallet stores with bi-directional search, one empty pallet shall be ready
in the closest slot for the change;
d) for fixed position pallet stores with unidirectional search, one empty pallet shall be ready
in the closest slot for the change and a second one in the next slot.
The work cycle of the machine undergoing the test is hereunder specified in precise and quantitative
terms. Each operational period, which is part of this test cycle has been identified and named by
codes from N 10 to N 180. The duration of each period is specified by the machine features, such as
the travels defined in 6.1, the maximum spindle speed of the machine, the rapid feed rates and the
maximum working feed rates of the linear axes. Noise emission values shall be determined for a
complete test cycle in every measuring point.
Starting from the conditions specified in 7.1, the following test cycle shall be carried out:
N 20 move back the three main axes to the centre of the machining volume (see 6.1);
N 40 first move all three axes simultaneously to their maximum positions (Xmax, Ymax, and
4
ISO/WD 10791-11
Zmax), then to their minimum positions (Xmin, Ymin, and Zmin), and then back to the centre
(Xmean, Ymean, and Zmean) at the maximum programmable feed rate;
N70 change the pallet with the closest one (see 7.1.3);
N 80 (= N 20) move back the three main axes to the centre of the machining volume (see
6.1);
N 100 (= N 40) first move all three axes simultaneously to their maximum positions (Xmax,
Ymax, and Zmax), then to their minimum positions (Xmin, Ymin, and Zmin), and then back to
the centre (Xmean, Ymean, and Zmean) at the maximum programmable feed rate;
N 120 (= N 60) change the tool with the closest one (see 7.1.2);
N130 (= N70) change the pallet with the closest one (see 7.1.3);
N 140 (= N 20) move back the three main axes to the centre of the machining volume (see
6.1);
N 150 (= N40) first move all three axes simultaneously to their maximum positions (Xmax,
Ymax, and Zmax), then to their minimum positions (Xmin, Ymin, and Zmin), and then back to
the centre (Xmean, Ymean, and Zmean) at the maximum programmable feed rate;
N 180 (= N 20) move back the three main axes to the centre of the machining volume (see
6.1).

When required to meet legal regulations or user’s specifications, the declaration of the noise
emission values of a machining centre is a responsibility of the supplier/manufacturer. The noise
declaration shall be made in such a way that the values can be verified according to ISO 4871.
The noise emission quantities to be declared by the supplier/manufacturer are those listed in 8, from
p) to s).
The noise declaration shall explicitly state that the noise emission values have been obtained
according to this standard and to basic noise test codes. If necessary, the noise declaration shall
clearly indicate what the deviations are from the basic standard(s).
Possible verifications shall be carried out by using the same mounting, installation and operating
conditions as those used for the initial determination of noise emission values.
