Footing Design Example: D L A FT Q

The document provides a detailed example solution for designing a rectangular footing to support a column. Key steps include: 1) Calculating the required footing plan dimensions of 10' x 15' 2" based on load combinations and allowable soil pressure. 2) Checking punching shear, one-way shear, and flexure capacities are sufficient to resist factored loads. 3) Designing steel reinforcement for flexure and at column interface. 4) Verifying load transfer stresses are below capacity at the column and footing interfaces. The design satisfies all strength requirements.

Footing Design Example

Design the rectangular footing shown

given the following:

Dead load = 500 kips (unfactored)

Live load = 400 kips (unfactored)
Seismic load (E) = 285 kips (service)
Soil weight = 110 pcf
Column size = 25” x 25”
qa = 6500 psf
footing width = 10 ft
f’c (column) = 5000 psi
f’c (footing) = 4000 psi

Solution:

Footing Dimensions:

*assuming thickness  1.5*(col width) = 1.5(25”) = 37.5”

Check two-way punching shear:

Assume d = 36” – 3” – 1” = 32”

b0 = (25 + 32)*4 = 228”
