5. Which of the following table values illustrates direct variation?
a. c.
x 1 2 3 4 5 x 2 4 5 4 5
y 4 8 12 16 20 y 12 48 60 16 20

Direct Variations
The value of y varies directly with the value of x if there exists a nonzero constant k such that y=kx or
equivalent to y/x =k. The constant k is called the constant of variation.
EXAMPLE 1:
The table below shows the number of hours (t) traveled and the distance (y) traveled by a car.
Numbers of hours traveled (t) 1 2 3 4 5
Distance in km covered (y) 40 80 120 160 200
a. Show that y varies directly as t.
b. Draw the graph of y against t.
c. Write the equation showing the relationship between y and t.
d. Find y when t=1.5 and t=4.25.
e. Find t when y=140 and y=260.
SOLUTION:
a.
t 1 2 3 4 5
y 40 80 120 160 200
40 40 40 40 40

EXAMPLE 2:
A worker’s pay check (P) varies directly as the number of hours (h) worked. For working 20 hours, the
payment is P 1,000.00. Find the payment for 45 hours of work.
SOLUTION:
Method 1: Method 2:
Because h and P are in direct proportion, Because h and P are in direct proportion,
P=kh, where k is a constant
When h=20, P=1,000
1,000=k20 Let h1=20, P1=1,000, and h2=45.
𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 Substitute these values into the proportion.
=k
𝟐𝟎
50=k
Thus, P=50h 1,000(45)
𝑃2 =
20
When h=45, P2=2,250
P=50(45) Thus, when h=45 hours, then P=₱2, 250.00.
P=2,250
=₱2,250
EXAMPLE 3:
Use a graph to find the value of velocity, v in ft./s, of a falling body when the given time t is 5 seconds.
Use the variation equation v=10t.
SOLUTION:
The related graph is a line. Therefore, we need only two points to construct it. To get these two points, let
us assign two values for it. If t=1, then by substitution, v=10(1) or v=10. If t=2, then by substitution,
v=10(2) or v=20. Hence, the coordinates of the points are (1, 10) and (2, 20), respectively. The graph is
shown below.
To get the value of v when t is equal to 5 seconds, draw a segment perpendicular to the x-axis at
x=5. The intersection of the given line and the segment drawn determine the value of v. The point of
intersection tells us that when t=5 seconds, the corresponding value of v is 50 ft/s.

In some cases, one quantity may vary directly as the power of another.
One example involves the area of a circle. That is . Hence, is the constant of variation, and the
area varies directly as the square of the radius r.
EXAMPLE 4:
The distance a body falls from rest is directly proportional to the square of the time it falls.
(a) If an object falls 20 meters in seconds, how far will it fall in 8 seconds?
(b) If an object was dropped from a height 405 meters, what time it took for the object to hit the ground?
SOLUTION:
A. Method 1: B. Method 1:
Method 2: Method 2:
Because d and t are in direct proportion, Because d and t are in direct proportion,
The table below shows the number of hours (t) traveled and the distance (y)
traveled by a car.
Number of hours traveled (t) 1 2 3 4 5
Distance in km covered (y) 60 120 180 240 300
a. Show that y varies directly as t.
b. Draw the graph of y against t.
c. Write the equation showing the relationship between y and t.
d. Find y when t=1.5 and t=4.25.
e. Find t when y=140 and y=260.
the second degree term.
