CLC 18.

10LN
A Nitrogen containing 18Cr-10Ni austenitic stainless steel (304LN grade)

CLC 18.10LN is a 18Cr-10Ni austenitic stainless steel with specific Nitrogen

additions.
Its low carbon content avoids intergranular corrosion, even on welded pieces
without an ulterior water quenching.

Alloys CLC 18.10LN exhibits an austenitic microstructure free of deleterious carbide

precipitations at grainboundaries. The grade contains some residual ferrite ( 2%)
after solution annealing (1050 - 1150°C / 1922 - 2102 °F) and water quenching.

Nitrogen alloying :
- improves tensile properties at room and moderate temperatures
- improves structure stability of austenite at very low temperature or under
severe cold deformations
- does not affect weldability or fabricability
- improves localized corrosion resistant properties.

Typical applications are food processing industry, chemical industry.

PROCESSING Hot forming

Hot forming should be carried out in a temperature range of 1150-750°C (2102 –

1382°F). Solution annealing is not required if hot forming has been performed
above 900°C (1652°F) followed by rapid cooling in air or water.
The cleanliness of the surface is very important (avoid oil contamination). A neutral
or slightly oxidising atmosphere is required. Due to the low thermal conductivity, the
holding time of temperature may be longer than carbon steel
( 50%). Quenching may be faster after forming.

CLC 18.10 LN - Ed 28.10.1999 - Page 2

Cold forming

The alloy can be cold formed without any problem. Due to the nitrogen addition, it is
less susceptible to martensitic transformation than cold formed CLC 18.9L or CLC
18.10 Ti.
The cold hardening of the steel explains that it may require more powerfull
equipments than structural steel.
Nitrogen bearing implies also some more powerfull equipments than Cr-Ni
austenitic stainless steels.

Pickling

A nitro hydrofluoric acid bath (10-20 HNO3 – 1.5-5% HF) at 20-60°C is used for the
pickling treatment.
A 10-20% H2SO4 – 1.5-5% HF pickling bath may also be used.
Passivation-decontamination treatments may be performed with a 10-20% weight
nitric acid solution.

Cutting

Thermal cutting (plasma, thermal sawing…). After cutting, pickling or grinding

are necessary to eliminate the oxide formed layer.

Mechanical cutting (shearing, stamping, cold sawing…).

WELDING The alloy can be easy welded without hot cracking phenomenon, using an
adequate filler metal ( a 5 up to 15% δ ferrite). It may be necessary to use nitrogen
alloyed welding products.

The alloy is not sensitive to cold cracking phenomenon.

All welding processes can be used including fillerless processes.

Filler material (used if the guaranteed mechanical properties of the filler material
are compatible whit the one of the base material) :

- Electrode E308L-15 or E308L-16 (ASME Sect II - Part C SFA 5-4)

- Wire ER308L or ER308 Si (ASME Sect II - Part C SFA 5-9).

Instead other filler material may be used (please consult us).

A post weld heat treatment is not necessary.

200°C (392°F) is the maximum interpass temperature.
Post weld pickling and passivation treatment are necessary.

CLC 18.10 LN - Ed 28.10.1999 - Page 3

MACHINING Due to its cold work hardening the alloy is less machinable than structural steel or
than a 13%Cr martensitic stainless steel.
