EL FILIBUSTERISMO (SETTINGS)

Introduction: El Filibusterismo, also known as The Reign of Greed, is a novel by Jose Rizal set
in the Philippines during the aftermath of the then-colonial Spain. It tells the story of a rich
Cuban jeweler who travels to the Philippines to work for the governor general and other colonial
government officials, but instead plans to launch a revolt against the authorities. Crisostomo
Ibarra reappears in the Fili as Simoun, intending to lead the rebellion he vowed to instigate.

Main Setting: December morning, Steamship Tabo (Pasig) - Chapter 1


El Filibusterismo's plot starts on a steamer ship sailing up the Pasig River from Manila to Laguna
de Bay. Simoun, Doa Victorina, Tiburcio de Espadaa, Paulita Gomez, Ben-Zayb, Padre Sibyla,
Padre Camorra, Don Custodio, Padre Salvi, Padre Irene, Padre Florentino, Isagani, and Basilio
are among the passengers. A smooth, polished coconut shell with the top removed to use as a
water dipper. During Rizal's time, a similarly shaped boat named Batea made trips to Laguna.

in conversation.

2. San Diego

Basilio arrived in San Diego just as the Christmas Eve procession was making its way
down the streets.

Ibarra family but has since been sold to Capitan Tiago. He then visits his mother's
grave and reflects about his life.

Spanish Academy, while Isagani tries to persuade Senor Pasta why the students
should give up.

Placido Penitente encounters Simoun and looking for something to do now that he
has dropped out of school.
