PHYSICAL EDUCATION

QUARTER 3 – MODULE 1
MELC: Executes the skills involved in the dance.
PART I.

A. Introduction

The Philippines has so many festivals: there are town fiestas celebrating foundation days, patron
saints and a combination of both. These festivals are occasions when and where people converge, the same
occasions when Government units and the private sector become generous with funds. Fiestas become
important avenues for artistic engagement. As artistic ventures especially in the Philippines countryside are
always wanting in venues and avenues for artistic engagement, it is in these convergences that the artists
find their audience.

B. Discussion
SINULOG FESTIVAL

The Sinulog Festival is a traditional celebration in Cebu City held every third Sunday of January to
honor the Santo Niño (Child Jesus). Basically, the festival is done by a dance ritual, in which it tells the
story of the Filipino people’s pagan past and their acceptance of Christianity. The word “Sinulog” means
“graceful dance”, wherein it all started in 1980 with a simple dance that represents the “sulog” (or current)
of a river in Cebu.

Background and Nature of Sinulog

The historic event where the Sinulog Festival is based was on April 7, 1521. Fernando de
Magallanes, a Portuguese navigator, landed on Cebu and claimed the area in the name of the King of Spain.
He gave the Santo Niño to Rajah Humabon’s wife, Hara Amihan as a baptismal present. Rajah Humabon
was Cebu’s ruler at that time. In honor of Carlos I’s mother, Juana, Hara Amihan’s name was changed to
Queen Juana. 800 natives together with their rulers were baptized into Christianity. This is the event where
the Sinulog Festival revolves. The main theme of the Sinulog dance is Queen Juana, with the Santo Niño in
her arms, blessing the people that are ill due to evil spirits.

Costumes in Sinulog Festival

In the Sinulog Festival, participants wear bright-

colored costumes, dressed in Knitted Filipiniana costumes and
dance to the music made by trumpets, native gongs, and
drums.
