dewatering wherever applicable.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Site Engineer – SE
Coordinate and supervise construction activities and construction groups, ensuring that
works are done as per project specifications and all safety measures have been implemented
on the work site. SE reports directly to Construction Manager.

6. PROCEDURES
6.1. Site Investigation and Preparation:
i. To determine suitable method of excavation to be employed, a site study is to be made on the nature
of materials, soil conditions, strata, ground water levels, presence of utilities, etc.,
6.2. Excavation:
i. CF to mark the layout of excavation area and ensure it is sufficiently barricaded from danger and
unauthorized access.
vi. Cat Scan shall be conducted prior to excavation to locate underground services.
vii. For all machineries or equipment entering for mass excavation, ramp shall be provided for entering
IN/OUT of the excavation area .Top edge of the excavation shall be sloped to avoid vertical direct
fall/slippage.
viii. Any loose, improperly compacted, soft or other unsuitable material which is encountered below or
adjacent to structural foundation levels shall be completely removed, backfilled with a suitable
approved material and compacted.
ix. Where the excavation results into a combination of suitable and unsuitable material the excavation
shall, unless otherwise agreed with the SE, be carried out in such a manner that the suitable materials
are excavated separately for use in the Works without contamination by the unsuitable material.
x. Unsuitable excavated material shall be removed and carted away to an approved dumping area after
approval from the SE.
xi. The sides of the excavation shall be adequately supported at all times.
xii. Trenches and pits shall be kept free of water.
xiii. In tidal and high water table areas the excavation shall be kept free from standing water at all times
during construction.
xiv. For excavations greater than 1.5m, the sides of the excavated area are to be adequately supported
using planks and scaffolding pipe shoring system to prevent sudden collapse.
xv. In shallow excavations less than 1.5 m, the bank of excavated area shall be sloped 30 degrees and
shall be maintained to avoid a collapse of the bank into the excavated area.
xvi. Plank shoring system shall be placed using scaffolding pipe to secure the planks.
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION
6.3. Filling:
i. Suitable material for earthworks shall be approved soil as determined by BS 1377 – Part 3
complying QCS 2014, Section-6, Part 3, Table 3.1.
ii. Backfill materials shall be placed in horizontal layers not over 150 mm in depth and
compacted to a minimum of 95% of the maximum dry density obtained by ASTM D1557.
iii. The backfill will be brought to a suitable level above grade to provide for anticipated settlement and
unless indicated otherwise, is to be sloped away from the structure.
iv. Filling around culverts, storm water and sewerage pipes, utility and structures, and between
building plot and footpath areas shall be from surplus excavated material obtained on site. The
maximum size of particle allowed in the backfill within one meter of culverts, storm water and
sewage pipes, utilities and structures shall be 25 mm.
Filling around pipes such as UPVC, GRP, HDPE, etc., SE to ensure that it is done with fine sand
void of aggregates so that it prevents rupturing of the pipe on vibration during the working
pressure for a minimum thickness of 150mm.
v. For utility trenches, after the pipes have been laid the trench refilling is to commence with
approved fill in compacted layers not exceeding 150 mm unconsolidated thickness.
vi. Potable water shall be used to mix the soil / fill materials to achieve the desired moisture content
of backfill compacted materials.
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION
6.5. Compaction:
i. Fill to be compacted by a suitable plate type vibrator, pedestrian operated vibrator roller and small
tandem roller.
ii. The material is to be placed in layers within the effective range of compaction of the plant
provided that the maximum loose (un-compacted) thickness of each layer does not exceed 200
mm.
iii. The material is to be watered and mixed as necessary. Compaction of each layer is to continue
until a density of a least 95% of the maximum dry density has been achieved.
iv. For utility trenches, each layer shall be well compacted by hand with ironrammers weighing not
less than 5 kg, until the trench has been filled to a height of 300 mm above the top of the utility.
6.6. Housekeeping:
All surplus material to be removed.
