It’s not always interesting to read books about the
past and the way people or animals used to live,
but there’s a new series on TV that brings animals
from the past to life! The series is called Primeval
and it’s on Saturday nights at seven o’clock. I saw
the first programme and it’s brilliant. It’s a sort of
science fiction adventure programme! It’s very
clever, and each week there is a different story
about a group of young scientists who are working
on a special project: finding different doorways in
time. That sounds crazy, I know! In their world
these doorways are between different times in the
past and today. Sometimes these doors or holes
open and then animals from the past can come
into our world today. Of course, the animals cause
big problems. Can you imagine dinosaurs walking
through a shopping centre? Or big water snakes
swimming in the River Thames? The young
scientists have to push the animals back through
the doors into their own worlds again. Sometimes
the scientists go back through the holes with the
animals. Then we see the worlds these animals
used to live in: big deserts, huge mountains, frozen
rivers. The filming is fantastic and very realistic.
Some of the animals didn’t really exist, but most of
them did. We can learn a lot about our world
millions of years ago. It’s certainly an interesting
way to learn about animal life in the past. This is
the third series of Primeval. Museums have said
that since the programme started two years ago,

Thank you for inviting me here today. As you know,
I’m a wildlife photographer and I’ve come to talk to
you about the job. I’ve been a wildlife photographer
for more than ten years, but I’ve never been this
nervous before! It’s strange to be back at school. I
feel like I’m taking exams again. I used to hate that!
Seriously, it’s good to be here. I understand a lot of
you are interested in the job of a wildlife
photographer. That’s great. I love my job. I think I’m
very lucky. I’ve been to some of the most interesting
places in the world. I’ve seen some very strange
animals and I’ve been in very dangerous situations.
I’ve taken photographs underwater and from the
tops of mountains – even from planes. I’ve loved
every minute. And I’m always looking forward to the
next experience!
I decided to become a wildlife photographer in 1999.
I was studying film at university and I saw a fantastic
wildlife series on TV. I thought: that’s it, I want to do
that. So I took a special course and then started to
work for a film company. It produced wildlife
documentaries. It’s not an easy job. It took a long
time to learn and in fact, I’m still learning new things.
You never stop. It’s also hard work. Sometimes I
have to get up in the middle of the night and wait for
hours and hours just for one picture! So if you want
to be a wildlife photographer, you have to love
animals and wildlife, you have to be patient and you
have to work hard. And I think it’s the best job on
the planet.

Emma Hi, Jane. How are you? Haven’t seen you since
the weekend.
Jane Yeah, not too bad. How about you? You weren’t
at school this morning.
Emma Oh, I’ve just got back from the doctor’s. I’ve had
a really bad thumb for a couple of weeks. I
couldn’t play tennis yesterday because it hurt so
much.
Jane Your thumb? People usually get bad elbows
from playing too much tennis. Not thumbs!
Emma Oh, it wasn’t the tennis.
Jane Well, what happened? Did you fall over or hit it?
Emma No, nothing like that. You’ll never guess why it’s
hurting.
Jane Go on! Tell me.
Emma Well, you should be careful. It might happen to
you!
Jane Because ...?
Emma The doctor I saw this morning told me it’s
because of my mobile phone.
Jane The phone your parents gave you for your
birthday?
Emma Yeah. I’ve got something called ‘texter’s thumb.’
You know I text a lot on my phone? Well, the
doctor says it’s not good for my hand. When you
repeat movements again and again, like when
you’re texting, it can make your thumb sore.
Jane Well, you do text a lot. Every time I see you
you’re texting someone!
Emma I’m not the only one. You do too!
Jane So, what’s the answer? Did he give you some
tablets or a cream?
Emma No. I’ve got to rest my thumb.
Jane So you can’t text anyone for a while?
Emma Who said that? Of course I’m going to continue
texting! I’m going to use my fingers!

The girl sat in the chair in front of the doctor’s desk. He
looked kind. He promised to help her. He stopped writing
and looked into her eyes. His eyes were dark, almost
black. Could he help her? Sandy wasn’t sure. There was
something dark in him. He asked her to close her eyes
and she decided to believe him. She closed her eyes. He
started talking very slowly and quietly.
‘Now, I want you to listen to me talking and relax. Make
sure you’re comfortable in the chair and that you’ve
switched off your phone. I’m going to turn out the lights.
It’s to help you to relax. I’m going to play you some
music. It’s very gentle and soft and very relaxing. Now, I
want you to imagine walking in a garden on a beautiful
summer’s evening. There. You’re standing on the grass.
Can you feel the wind blowing softly around you? There
are birds in the sky above you. Can you hear them
singing? Can you see them flying from one tree to the
next? They are bluebirds and their song is lovely. You
can hear them over the music. Look around you. There
are flowers, and insects on the flowers. You can hear
them buzzing. It isn’t annoying – it’s a lovely garden
sound. Now, I want you to walk forward. You are going
towards the pretty lake in the garden. There are fish in the
water. Watch them swimming. They are blue, yellow and
red fish. Walk towards the lake. You can feel the tall
flowers touching you as you pass them. Remember to
walk slowly. One, two, three ... You’re nearly at the lake.
It’s getting nearer. Now, what’s that sound? It’s a plane.
Can you hear it flying over you? It’s loud, very loud. You
can’t hear the insects buzzing or the birds – it’s just that
loud, horrible plane and now the sun has gone. Feel the
raining hitting your hands and legs. It’s sharp like bullets.
Turn. Turn quickly. There is something horrible in the
water … it’s rising, it’s coming closer ... Run, quickly ...
and ...’

Pete Hi Angela. Do you want to come round on
Saturday and play my new computer game? I
got it for my birthday.
Angela I’d love to, Pete. Can we make it Sunday? On
Saturday I’m helping with the town garden
project.
Pete What’s that?
Angela It was advertised in the newspaper a couple of
weeks ago. Towns and cities are getting bigger
and bigger and all the green areas are
disappearing.
Pete Oh, you mean people want more rooms in their
houses so they’re building over their gardens?
Angela Yes, that’s one reason. Another is that people
don’t want big gardens now because there’s too
much work to do. Also some parks are getting
smaller. The land is used for new hotels or
offices. So we don’t see so many green areas
in our towns now.
Pete Is that a bad thing?
Angela Definitely! Green areas are good for people to
walk in and relax. Trees and flowers and even
grass are good for the air that we breathe. And
the areas are home to lots and lots of small
animals and insects. Whole species will be lost
if we don’t do something.
Pete So what’s this garden project?
Angela It’s organised by an environmental group. They
buy land where there are old buildings that
aren’t used now. The old buildings are knocked
down and the land is used to make lovely town
gardens. There are a lot of volunteers like me
and we work in the gardens for a few hours
every week. I go on Saturday morning.
Pete I think that’s a fantastic idea.
Angela Well, why don’t you come too?
Pete Ah … I’m not very good at gardening, Angela.

Gemma I think this project is a very good idea.
Dave Yeah, you’re right. A school magazine on the
website is much better than a paper one. And
it’s good to learn about how to design the web
pages too!
Gemma The only problem is that we’ve been asked to do
the problem page!
Dave Hey! It doesn’t have to be a problem. If we do it
well, we’ll get good marks for the project. I need
some good marks this term.
Gemma Yeah. Me too. OK. So where are we going to
find the problems for the page?
Dave Well, I think we should write a notice and put it
up in every classroom.
Gemma You mean something like: If you’ve got a
problem, write to us and we’ll give you an
answer in the next online school magazine?
Dave Yeah. But we need to say what sort of problem.
If we don’t give an example, they’ll send us
questions about what’s gone wrong on their
laptop or stuff like that!
Gemma OK. Let’s give some examples. How about: My
dad always wants to check my homework
before I give it in. How can I stop him?
Dave Does he really? That’s so annoying. Especially
when your parents suggest changes. I think you
should ...
Gemma No, my dad’s fine. It’s just an example. We
could add that to the notice.
Dave OK. I see what you mean. Good idea. I think we
should also say that they don’t have to put their
names. Because some students won’t give us
any personal problems if we put their names
after them!
Gemma True. And we must put in a time limit, like:
Please send us your problems before four
o’clock on Friday the sixteenth.
Dave Why then?
Gemma Because the web designer person needs all the
material for the online magazine before we finish
school on Friday. Then he’ll work on it over the
weekend. Weren’t you listening?
Dave Sorry. I was thinking about a concert I want to
go to next week. My parents have said I can’t
go. I think I’ll climb out of the window when they
go to bed.
Gemma You can’t do that! What will happen if they catch
you?
Dave Then I think I’ll write a problem for you to answer
in the online magazine! No names, of course!
