Flushing of lube oil system after major repairs
Once engine is assembled and crankcase cleaned, check system oil tank, filters, etc.
Remember the B&K filter candle element lifetime is 2-4years when running engine on HFO.
The flushing activity with pre lube oil pump. The line can be expected clean if pump has not operated
since damage. If the pump has operated the suction strainer needs to be checked. If particles found
mechanical cleaning of pre lube oil piping is needed.
We must expect particles on every pipe and component of the oil system, since the bearing material
has travelled all around.
Remove the MB feeding pipes from main LO rail in sump and blind flange the oil supply to cam gears
and shaft.
Check visually the suction piping and suction strainer to the engine driven lube oil pump to avoid any
particles entering the pump. Mechanical cleaning needed if any particles found.
LO thermostatic valves should also be manually cleaned.
Increase oil temperature by oil separator. Also separator lines can be contaminated by particles of
damaged bearings, the suction strainer needs to be cleanned.
Remember that HT-water has to be hot when warm oil is circulated in engine. Otherwise the
condensation will cause corrosion in cylinder liners, connecting rods and crankshaft.
If possible an additional “indication filter” – metal cone lined up with fine wire mesh or similar – could
be installed on a location where an inspection can be done after some hours of oil circulation.
Possible locations; after pre lube oil pump.
If not possible to use additional filter the Automatic filter candles can be sacrificed and used for
flushing. The flushing time should be long enough that particles accumulation is completely ended.
Oil is first circulated from tank through system and through the opened engine main rail back to tank,
without entering shaft and gears.
First run for ~2h and if inspection filter has been installed check until result is clean. Otherwise keep
close eye on Automatic filter and maintain flushing as far the filter collects dirt.
Second phase would be with the main bearing feeding pipes in place and blind flange removed, so oil
has access through the engine.
Automatic filter installed.
Engine can be turned by using turning gear during flushing. First just a quarter of revolution at time to
open and close the different oil channels and to direct the oil to different sections in engine. Later ~10
minutes at time.
After flushing, empty and clean crankcase, filters, sump tank, change filter elements etc.
Install new filters and fill-in fresh batch of lube oil.
Open and clean separator.
