IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or Review on the characteristics and definitions of the
presenting the new different types of sequences: arithmetic, geometric,
lesson harmonic and Fibonacci.
B. Establishing a Determine what type of sequence is shown in each
purpose for the lesson number.
Expected Answers
1. 6, 18, 54, 162, ... (Geometric Sequence)
2. 4, 10, 16, 22, ... (Arithmetic Sequence)
3. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ... (Fibonacci Sequence)
4. 625, 125, 25, 5, … (Geometric Sequence)
5. 1/2, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8, ... (Harmonic Sequence)
C. Presenting examples The knowledge on the different types of sequences can be
of the new lesson used in solving word problems related to real life.
D. Discussing new A conference hall has 20 rows of seats. The first row
concepts and contains 20 seats, the second row contains 22 seats, the
practicing new skills third row contains 24, and so on. How many seats are
#1 there in the last row? How many seats are there in the
conference hall?

Solution:
20, 22, 24, …

The sequence of the number of seats per row shows an

arithmetic sequence. Hence, to find the number of seats
on row 20, use the formula:
)
A20 = 20 + 2(20-1)
A20 =20+38
A20 =58 seats

To find the total number of seats in the conference hall,

use the formula:

S20= 20/2 (20+58)

S20=10 (78)
S20=780 seats

E. Discussing new Find the sum of the first 8 terms of a geometric sequence
concepts and where the first term is 4, and the common ratio is 3.
practicing new skills
#2 Solution:
a1=4, n=8, r=3
n
a 1(1−r )
S n=
1−r
8
4(1−3 )
S8 =
1−3

S8 =
−2

4(−6560)
S8 =
−2

−26240
S8 =
−2
S8 =13120

Therefore, the sum of the sequence is 13,120.

If you worked at a job where you were paid 10 pesos for

F. Developing Mastery the first day and your pay was doubled for each of the
next 5 days, how much money would you earn on the 5th
day?
Solution:
a1=10, n=5, r=2
a 1(1−r n )
S n=
1−r
5
10(1−2 )
S5 =
1−2

10(1−32)
S5 =

10(−31)
S5=
−1
S5=310

Therefore, the total earning after 5 days is 310 pesos

G. Finding practical A line is divided into six parts forming a geometric
applications of sequence. If the shortest length is 3cm and the longest
concepts and skills in is 96cm, find the length of the whole line.

Solution:

BAGTIC NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, MABINAY II
MATHEMATICS RESOURCE PACKAGE

Given that a1=3cm, a6=96cm, n=6

Since   an=a1rn-1 we have 96=3(r5)

r=
√ 5 96

r=2
3

For the length of the whole line, we have

a 1(1−r n )
S n=
1−r
6
3(1−2 )
S6 =
1−2
3(1−64)
S6 =
−1
−189
S6 =
−1

S6 =189 cm.

Therefore, the whole length of the line is equal to 189cm.

H. Making A sequence (an) is a set of real numbers that is formed

Generalizations and according to a certain logical order. All numbers in a
abstractions about sequence follow a definite pattern.
the lesson
A series is the sum of the terms of a sequence.

Knowledge of the different types of sequences is useful in

solving problems related to real life.

I. Evaluating learning Answer each problem.

1.Jerry deposited 20,000.00 pesos as an initial investment

that will add an additional 1,750.00 pesos for every year
that his money stays in the account. How much money
will he have in his account at the end of year 8?

)
a8 = 20000 + 1750(8-1)
a8 =20000+12250
a8 =32,250 pesos

Jerry’s total money after 8 years is 32,250.00 pesos.

2. A certain culture of bacteria initially contains 1 000

bacteria and doubles every hour. How many bacteria are
in the culture at the end of 10 hours?

Prepared by: MAILYN B. ESCOTON, SST-III

BAGTIC NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, MABINAY II
MATHEMATICS RESOURCE PACKAGE

Solution:
Since the number of bacteria doubles every hour and there
are initially 1 000, therefore at the end of the first hour
there will be 2 000. At the end of the second hour, there
will be 4 000 and so on.
A table of values will help .

t hours 1 2 3 4 5

no. of 2 000 4 000 8 000 16 000 32 000

bacteria

The second row of the table shows a geometric

sequence where a1= 2000 and r = 2. Using the formula
for the nth term of a geometric progression, then,
n−1
an = a1⋅r
2000(2)10−1 =2000(2)9 =2000(512 ) =1 024 000

There are 1 024 000 bacteria at the end of 10 hours.

J. Additional You borrow money for a new car from the bank. After
Activities for month 1, the loan balance is 14,760.00 pesos. After month
application or 2, it is 14,520.00 pesos. If this pattern continues, what
remediation will the balance be after 21 months?
Given: a1=14,760 a2=14,520.00 Find: a21
Solution:
d= 14520 – 14760 = -240

a21=14760 + (-240) (21-1)

a21=14760 + (-4800)
a21=9,960

Therefore, the balance after 21 months is 9,960.00 pesos.

DISCUSSIONS:
When solving word problems involving sequences;

First, decide if you’re looking for a specific term in your sequence, or if

you need to find the sum. Then use the appropriate formula.

To find a specific term of an arithmetic sequence:

a n=a1 + d( n−1))

To find the sum of an arithmetic sequence:

To find a specific term of a geometric sequence:

n−1
a n=a1 r

To find the sum of an arithmetic sequence:
