[Time: Two hours Maximum: 50 Marks]
Answer all questions

1. a. The speed of an electric vehicle fed from a separately excited dc motor is controlled by a
chopper with a dc supply voltage of 220 V. The motor armature circuit has Ra = 0.5 Ω and
La = 10 mH. The motor constant is Kaϕ = 0.1 V/rpm. The electric vehicle is driving a
constant load torque with an average armature current of 30 A. Assuming continuous
current conduction, analyze the range of duty cycle and the range of speed control for the
electric vehicle. (5)

b. A conveyor system fed from a separately excited dc motor is used to transport baggages
in an airport. The movement of conveyor is restricted to only one direction with braking
enabled. The motor is operated from a battery source. Design a converter circuit and
explain the operations required to control the speed of the conveyor. (5)

2. A 230 V, 960 rpm, 30 A, separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 1.2 Ω
and inductance of 50 mH. Motor is controlled by a single-phase half-controlled converter
with a source voltage of 230V, 50Hz. Assuming continuous conduction,
i) Calculate the speed of the motor for α=45˚ at full load.
ii) Calculate the firing angle to run the motor at a speed of 500 rpm and half the
rated torque.
iii) Calculate the motor speed if one of the SCR gets open circuited when the motor is
running at a speed of 800 rpm and ¼ th of the rated load. (10)

3. a. The armature of a separately excited dc motor is controlled by a 3-phase full bridge

converter with a per phase voltage of 240 V, 50 Hz. The field of the motor is supplied by
a 1-phase, 230 V, 50 Hz uncontrolled rectifier. The field current is set as maximum as
possible. The motor parameters are Ra  0.3, R f  175  & motor voltage constant
K v  1.5 V / A  rad / s . The firing angle of the armature converter is 45˚ and the rated
armature current is 30A. Assuming continuous conduction, calculate
(i) the torque developed Td
(ii) the speed of the motor, ω (rad/s) (6)

b. Sketch to scale the time variations of output voltage, output current and input current
of a single phase half controlled converter for a firing angle of 90˚. (4)

4. A pump drive fed from a separately excited dc motor is used for feeding water to various
processes in an industry. The pump has to be operated only in forward motoring mode as
the fluid pressure provides adequate braking torque. Develop a speed control strategy to
maintain constant fluid flow with variations in pressure head and nature of pumped fluid
and explain. (5)

5. A 220V, 750 rpm, 200A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.05Ω.
Armature is fed from a three-phase non-circulating current dual converter consisting of
fully controlled rectifiers A and B. Line voltage of ac source is 400V. Assuming
continuous conduction, calculate the firing angles of the converters for:
(i) Motoring operation at rated torque and 600 rpm
(ii) Regenerative braking operation at rated torque and 600 rpm. (5)

6. A separately excited dc motor has a constant load torque of 60 Nm. The motor is driven by
a single phase full converter with a supply voltage of 240 V ac. Armature resistance of
motor is 2Ω and motor constant is equal to 2.5 V/rad/sec. Assuming continuous
conduction, calculate the firing angle to operate the motor at 200 rpm. (5)

7. An industrial fan fed from a dc motor is used for drying process. The speed of the fan
should be varied between 5% of the base speed to twice the rated speed of the motor and
the load varying between no-load to rated load. Discuss the operating modes of the motor
to achieve the wide range of speed. (5)
