Last meeting we have discussed and performed the different music of southeast Asia. The class
also understood the differences and similarities of Southeast Asian music.
Group yourselves in 3
A map of Korea, China and Japan will be shown. The teacher will play three (3)
different songs .
Together with your group, the teacher will only give 1 minute for you to brainstorm
with your members.
The teacher will call the representative of the group to 5identify what country the
song belong.

The music of East Asia, including China, Korea and Japan, contributes certain characteristics such as
the tonal system and the cultural influences. These three countries have contributed much to the
region's identity in shaping its unique culture.
Instrumental music of Japan Traditional Japanese music is basically meditative in character. Its
performance is highly ritualized, as much in the music itself, as in the composure of the musicians
when performing it. Japanese chamber and solo music have a slow meditative pace.
How does the music of East Asia differ from that of Western cultures? In East Asia, the scale is
based off of the first note. East Asian music only makes use of five types of instruments. East Asian
scales are based on mathematical formulas, in which the distance between notes is decided by ratios
of pitches.

Japan Music
The art concerned with combining vocal or instrumental sounds for
beauty of form or expression, specifically as it is carried out in Japan.
The main tone of Japanese music has two modes; the Yosen and the In-
sen. Both consist of five primary tones based on scale and seven tones.
Ex. Sakrua or cherry blossoms
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Traditional Japanese music mediative in character.

MUSIC OF CHINA
The music of China dates to the dawn of Chinese civilization with the
documents and artifacts providing evidence of a well-developed musical
culture as early as the Zhou Dynasty( 1122 B.C.E). In ancient china, music
was regarded as central to the harmony and longevity of the state
VOCAL MUSIC
Traditionally been sung in a thin, non-resonant voice or in falsetto and is
usually solo rather than choral

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Chinese traditional music is played on solo instruments or in a small
ensembles of plucked and bowed stringed instruments, flutes, and
various cymbals, gongs and drums.
VOCAL MUSIC
Arirang is a Korean folk song used as a symbol of Korean and Korean
culture

Now that you have the necessary knowledge and skills about the East Asian music. I want you to go
back with your groups and prepare for a performance activity. (Differentiated activity)
Going back to the group with their corresponding countries. (Japan, Korea, China).
Each group will listen to the previous music and interpret the music through dancing,
singing and acting.
To master your task, your group will be given 10 minutes to practice your task.
Present your 1 minute performance in front of the class. Your performance will be
assessed considering the following criteria. (Refer to the criteria below)
