Present Simple Passive Troubles for Halloween

This exercise should help in minimizing your “passive troubles.”

You will do two things:
First, identify the Subject + Verb + Object (S+V+O) of each sentence;
Second, change the sentence to passive keeping the same tense as in the original
sentence.
Look at this example:

1. Kenny and his dad bought a pumpkin to place in front of their house.
a. What is the … of this sentence?
Subject Kenny and his dad
Verb bought
Object a pumpkin
b. Now make the change. Begin with the Object as your new subject. Use the
appropriate tense of “be” and the past participle of the main verb. Add the “by
phrase”; and write the rest of the sentence.
Passive sentence: A pumpkin was bought by Kenny and his dad to place in front of
their house.

A Thanksgiving Story

Directions: Read the following story. Choose five of the sentences and change them to
passive sentences.

Last Thanksgiving, my family celebrated the holiday together. My grandparents, aunts

and uncles, and cousins came to our house. My mother and grandmothers prepared the
food. Everyone enjoyed the turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and mashed
potatoes. For dessert, the family ate pumpkin pecan pie and cherry pie. After dinner, we
watched the Detroit Lions football game. Then, the kids played a game of football in the
backyard. We told stories about past holidays. I think that everyone had a wonderful
holiday. I can't wait for next year!
