Daisy White is 18. She studies sports science at university. She’s also a champion athlete.
Read about her day.

I usually get up at about 5.30 in the morning. In the summer it’s OK, but in the winter it’s cold and
dark. I hate it! I always have a big breakfast. I like cereal and toast.

At 6.30, I go to the sports centre. I’m there for two and a half hours! I do some warm up and stretching
exercises then I go to the running track. After that, I practise my jumping and throwing.

A holiday with a difference

Where do you usually stay on holiday? In a hotel, a tent or a villa? Why not try something a bit
more unusual? At High Forest Park, you can stay in a log cabin!

Our log cabins have two or three bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. They have all got
televisions, DVD players, microwaves and internet access. And for a really special holiday,
you can choose one of our Five Star log cabins. These have got dishwashers, games
consoles and even hot tubs!

There’s so much to do at High Forest Park. You can take a walk along our forest trails, or
explore the forest by bike. You can watch the wild birds and animals down by the lake or

Thomas Alva Edison 1847–1931

Thomas Edison was an American inventor and scientist. As a child he wasn’t happy at school so
he studied at home with his mother.

Edison started his first job when he was 15. He helped to send messages by telegraph.

Telegraphs were the only way to send messages in those days because there weren’t any
telephones. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the first telephone in 1876, Edison improved
it by inventing an early microphone.

In 1877 Edison created the first phonograph, a machine that recorded and reproduced sound. A
year later, he invented the light bulb. In 1889, he invented the kinetoscope, a machine to show
moving pictures.

Edison invented more than 1000 things during his life. When he died in 1931, people all over the
USA switched off the lights in his honour.
