1. (a) Why a new approach required to atomic structure?

(b) Show how the LCAO approximation gives rise to bonding and
anti-bonding orbitals. What orbital are formed by the axial
overlap of p orbitals?
(c) (i)What does it meant by anomalous electronic configurations?
Give two examples.
(ii) Write a electronic configurations of following ions: Re2+ and
Gd+
(d) Calculate the percentage of ionic character of HCl? The inter
nuclear distance of HCl is 1.28410−10 m and its actual dipole (5,5,5,4)
moment is 3.68910−30 Cm.

2. (a) (i)Predict the molecular hybridization and geometry for the

following molecules SO42-, H3O+ and XeO2F4 using
VSEPR theory?

differently in a non-uniform electrostatic field: Why? (5,5,5,3.5)
3. (a) How do you calculate lattice energy from the Born - Landé
equation and What is the limitation of it?
(b) (i) Sketch molecular orbital diagram for NC molecule and
calculate bond order and magnetic properties.
(ii) Based on the M.O diagram arrange the following in
increasing order of their bond length. O2+, O2-, and O22+
(c) For the 6s and 5dx2-y2 hydrogen-like orbitals, sketch the
following:

0.1Å. What is the uncertainty involved in the measurement of its
velocity? (5,5,5,3.5)
