1. General
Turbine lubrication system adopts the way of main oil pump - pressure reducing valve oil
supply. The main oil pump is driven directly by motor, its outlet supplies lube oil to each
bearing of BFPT and feed water pump, turning gear and shaft coupling cooling oil, after
pressure being reduced by the pressure reducing valve. The system medium is ISO-Vg32
turbine oil. The pressures are all gauge pressure, except for special note.
2. System composition
This system is composed of two main oil pumps, a DC emergency oil pump, integrated
oil tank, oil spill valve, oil cooler, switch valve, fume exhaust unit, adjustable non-return
valve, jacket oil pipeline, ultrasonic oil level indicator, magnetic oil level meter, oil return
strainer, twin oil filter, accumulator, monitoring instrument, etc., see figure 0-1-1.
3. Brief introduction to the system equipment
3.1 Main oil pump
Two main oil pumps are provided in the system, one on operation, the other on standby,
supplying sufficient lube oil and cooling oil to the turbine, feed water pump, shaft coupling
and turning gear. Its drive motor is explosion proof motor.
Main oil pump characteristic parameters are as follows:
Design Head: 83m
Rate Flow: 27 m3/h
Operation Speed: 2930r/min
EMP: 18.5 kW
Voltage : AC 400V
Frequency: 50Hz
3.2 Integrated oil tank
Oil tank adopts the way of integration, which integrates large number of equipment like
main oil pump, DC emergency pump, fume exhaust unit, ultrasonic oil level indicator,
magnetic level meter, electrical heater, oil return strainer, twin oil filter, monitoring instrument
of the system together in the oil tank, so that it will be convenient for operation, monitoring,
fire protection, and simple for power station arrangement. The oil tank capacity is 3.66m3
during normal operation.
3.3 Emergency oil pump
One DC emergency oil pump is provided in the system, which supplies lube oil and
cooling oil to the turbine, feed water pump, turning gear and shaft coupling in case the main
oil pump is unable to operate normally, its drive motor is explosion proof motor.

Emergency oil pump characteristic parameters are as follows:


Design Head: 50 m
Rate Flow: 21.5 m3/h
Operation Speed: 3000 r /min
EMP: 13 kW
Voltage : DC 220V
3.4 Oil spill valve
This valve is a spring type spill valve, installed in the oil tank, and on the lube oil main
pipe. During operation, it can automatic keep the bearing inlet pressure stable at certain range.
Its Characteristic data are as follows:
Operation pressure: 0.25~0.35MPa
Operation temperature: 45℃
Nominal diameter: 38mm
3.5 Oil cooler
Two tube-type oil coolers are provided in the oil system, one on operation, the other on
standby. Closed cooling water is used as cooling medium to carry away the heat which is
produced by bearing friction, guaranteeing the bearing inlet temperature of 40~45℃, its
characteristic parameters are as follows:
Cooling area: ~32.4 m2 Inlet oil temperature: 65℃
Cooling water follow: 50 m3/h Outlet oil temperature: 45℃
Cooling oil follow: 30 m3/h Cooling water temperature: 38℃
Oil resistance: ≤0.05 MPa Hydraulic resistance: ≤0.05 MPa

3.6 Fume exhaust unit
One fume exhaust unit is provided in the system, vertically installed on the integrated oil
tank cover, it integrates the fume extraction fan with oil fume separator to unite. This device
makes the return oil system of turbine and the return oil chamber of each bearing pedestal
form micro negative pressure, guarantee oil return freely, and separate the oil, fume mixture
produced in the system, emitting the fume, returning the oil drop to oil tank, so as to reduce
the pollution to the environment, guarantee oil system safe and reliable. In addition, in order
to prevent negative pressure too high in the chamber of each bearing pedestal and water go
into the oil caused by turbine gland steam leak-off into the bearing pedestal, a set of air door
has been designed on the fume exhaust unit to control the fume exhaust capacity, to keep the
bearing pedestal at micro negative pressure.

3.7 Switch valve
Switch valve is a cylindrical plate type, which can make the two oil coolers switching
each other.
Characteristic parameters:
Nominal diameter: NPS 3
Design pressure: 1.0 MPa
Operation temperature: ≤80℃
3.8 Electrical heater
6 electrical heaters are installed in the integrated oil tank, with total power of 18kW,
voltage of 230VAC, frequency of 60Hz. If the oil temperature is lower than 20℃ before the
unit start-up, start the electrical heater, when the oil temperature rise to 35℃, stop heating.
Thermocouple is installed in the surface of the electrical heater, used to control the surface
temperature, when the temperature is higher than 150℃, should stop heating, and go on
heating after the temperature drop to 100℃.
3.9 Twin filter
To guarantee cleanness of lube oil of the system, twin filter is installed in the lube oil
pipeline before oil cooler, this filter has bypass valve and pressure differential transmitter, it is
safe and reliable in operation and convenient in maintenance.
Technical parameters:
Nominal pressure: 1.0 MPa
Transmitting pressure difference: 0.05 MPa
Original pressure loss: △P≤0.03 MPa
Filtering accuracy: 25 m
Through flow capacity: 1300L/min
3.10 Adjustable non-return valve
Be used to adjust the oil pressure of the lube oil main pipe.
3.11 Ultrasonic oil level indicator and magnetic oil level indicator
Ultrasonic oil level indicator and magnetic oil level indicator are installed in the
integrated oil tank clean oil area. Ultrasonic is used in oil level distant transmitting and
warning, and magnetic turnover panel is used for oil level on-site indication.
3.12 Accumulator
In order to make the instantaneous pressure change minimumly when the oil pump is

switching, three 100L accumulators are supplied on the lube oil pipe, each accumulator
nitrogen-filled pressure is 0.06MPa, and is installed on operation platform.
4. Operation of oil system
Before starting the system, make sure the oil quality in the system meets the cleanness
requirement of startup operation, and the oil tank level is at the highest. When the oil tank
temperature is lower than 20℃,close the cooling water valve of the oil cooler, heat the oil
temperature to 35℃, then close the electrical heater, start the main oil pump and the fume
exhaust fan, force the lube oil system to circulate, after the oil temperature reaches 45℃, open
the cooling water valve of the oil cooler, adjust the adjustable non-return valve to keep the
main pipe oil pressure within 0.12~0.14MPa. Interlock protection is provided in auxiliary oil
pump, emergency oil pump, turning gear and oil pressure of the lube oil main pipe, when the
oil pressure of the lube oil main pipe is lower than 0.1MPa(g), warn and start the auxiliary
pump, when the lube oil main pipe oil pressure is lower than 0.07MPa, start the emergency
pump and shutdown, and stop the turning gear when the lube oil main pipe oil pressure is
lower than 0.03MPa. It must make low pressure interlock protection test every half a month.
5. Introduction of the return oil system
This system includes 3 return oil main pipes, the front bearing pedestal lube oil return oil
(Φ141.3×6.55), rear bearing pedestal lube oil(Φ114.3×6.02)and feed water pump, return to
dirty area. Installation of the return oil pipe must be toward the oil tank with a gradual slope
of not less than 1, so as to make the return oil in the pipe in a half full status, beneficial to the
oil fume of each bearing pedestal to flow to the oil tank through the space above the oil
surface, then emit to atmosphere after separation by the fume exhaust unit. After the return oil
returns to the oil tank dirty oil area, it enters the clean oil area after filtered by the strainer.
6. Lube oil temperature
This system uses ISO Vg32 turbine oil, the unit bearings require the inlet temperature to
be 40~45℃, the normal bearing return oil temperature is lower than 65℃.
7. Oil tank level
Before putting into operation, it is necessary to set the middle position of the highest oil
level and the lowest oil level to 0 according to the drawing oil level requirement(from the oil
tank 384mm), to be as the normal oil level of the oil level indicator.
During normal operation Highest oil level +89mm
Lowest oil level -114mm
Shut-down oil level -241mm
8 Oil pressure adjustments:
8.1 Setting oil system’s pressure before starting the system:

8.1.1 Open the manhole flange cover 1,2 and 3 of the oil tank manhole cover.
8.1.2 Start a main oil pump.
8.1.3 Close the oil spill valve from the manhole flange cover 3, set adjust check valve 1 ,make
the oil pressure of main pipe on the operation layer is 0.18MPa.
8.1.4 Open the oil spill valve, make oil pressure reduce to 0.15MPa.
8.1.5 Stop the main oil pump, and start the other one, set the oil pressure in 0.14±0.01MPa.
Make sure the oil pressure on the operation layer is 0.14±0.01MPa when the two main oil pump
working separately.
8.1.6 Stop main oil pump, open the DC emergency oil pump, adjust check valve2 ,set the oil
pressure on the operation layer is 0.14MPa.
8.1.7 Close flange cover .
Make the oil pressure higher than 0.14 when the system working. If the pressure is not
higher than 0.14 set it again.
9. Requirement of the oil system
9.1 Installation of the oil system must meet DL5011 – 92 “Technical code for construction and
acceptance of power construction works” (turbine unit) “Technical conditions for oil system
installation”.
9.2 Oil circulation flushing requirement of the oil system must meet DL5011-92“Technical code
for construction and acceptance of power construction works (turbine unit) “Technical conditions for
oil system flushing”.
10. Main performance index of the turbine oil
10.1 Quality requirement of the turbine oil
10.1.1 Excellent anti oxidation stability and thermal stability
10.1.2 Good viscosity temperature behavior and proper viscosity.
10.1.3 Good low temperature operation performance.
10.1.4 Good resistance to emulsification.
10.1.5 Good anti-foam performance.
10.1.6 Good antirust and anticorrosion performance.
10.1.7 Good air release performance.
