Lesson 6 Moment of Inertia
Lesson 6 Moment of Inertia
Lesson 6 Moment of Inertia
Objective:
To determine the moment of inertia of a plane area.
Formula:
I ƛ = ∫ r 2 dm
I ƛ = ∫ r 2 dA
Where r is the distance from a particle of mass m of a fixed distance ƛ
Example:
Solution: Y (4, 6) 2
y =9 x
6
Solution: xr - xL y= 2x
4
Ix= ∫ y 2 ( x r −x 1) dy (2, 4) 2
y =8 x

Evaluation:
Find the moment of inertia of the area bounded by the given curves with respect to the
specified axis.
2. y3 = x , x = 8 , y = 0 ; with respect to y = 0
4. x = 2 √ y , x = 6 , y = 4 ; with respect to x = 0
5. y2 = 8x , x = 0 , y = 4 ; with respect to y = 4
Formula:
I ƛ = ∫ r 2 dv
Example:
Find the moment of inertia with respect to the x-axis of the solid
generated by revolving the area bounded by y= x 2, y=0 and x=2 abt.

Evaluation:
If the area bounded by the given curves is revolved about the specified axis,
find the moment of inertia of the solid generated with respect to the axis of
revolution.
