An Industrial Visit to Wilo Mather and Platt Pumps Pvt. Ltd., Pune, was
organized by the Operation Supply Chain Management Department in
association with Indira Global Business School Chapter for the student
members on Friday 24th June 2022. Wilo pump is a subsidiary company of
Mather and Platt Pumps Group.
A total of 36 student members of First-year Master of Business Administration
along with Student Faculty Advisor Prof. Pranita Bhujbal and Prof. Atish
Zagade accompanied the students during the visit. The visit was conducted
under the guidance of Prof. Virendra Tatke, Director of Indira Global Business
School.

Their plant is based in Pimpri-Chinchwad area and they have opened a new
plant at site outside plant because of the congestion that was happening at the
Pimpri-Chinchwad plant. In the year 2009 a new state of the art manufacturing
facility covering over approximately 6000 sq. meters has been built at Kolhapur
to manufacture the latest high efficiency pumps.
Wilo Mather and Platt Pumps Private Limited started operations in Pimpri-
Chinchwad area in 1959. The company manufactures various types of
centrifugal pumps and pumping systems at its Pimpri-Chinchwad plant.

During the visit we were given demonstrations of pumps and pumping

systems, pumps for building services, pumps for water management, pumps
for industrial applications, pumps for firefighting applications, control panels
for pumps and pumping systems amongst others. And also, we were given
information about various classifications of the above systems like the
horizontal and vertical pumps, motor operated and engine operated pumps,
pumps that are to operate deep inside water, pumps for liquids of various
viscosities, etc.

In the conference hall we were given a concise presentation about the future
plans of the company. The main theme of the future plans was sustainability
and designing considering the needs and the problems that may arise. One
best example of such a thing was that the ground water level all over the world
is going down so the pumps to lift that water would need to be of high capacity
and power.

In the presentation, considering the current hazardous way used in

refrigerating cycle, the company is trying to come up with more nature friendly
solution to this and the solution was called water-based cooling system. In the
water-based cooling system the refrigerating fluid will be water instead of
hazardous chloro-Fluro carbons. The company has developed Asia’s largest
pump test facility by volume.

While surveying the plant we were guided by Milind Karve, Senior general
manager at the plant. The survey was in orderly fashion starting from where
raw material gets unloaded from the trucks. After that we went the workshop
where the materials were cut into dimensions according to designs. Then the
cut material goes into the fitting segment of the plant where various parts of
the pumps are either welded together or bolted or by some methods to make
them leakage proof.
The most important part of the internal supply chain of the plant was the
testing section to which access for non-authorized was restricted. Various
pumps manufactured at the plant go through various testing phases making
sure that they confirm to the standards of the legality. The plant was fully
automated. They give security of employee’s paramount importance. Various
gathering points were marked in the campus of the plant in case of any
calamity happens. Up head cranes have been used to move the material from
one place to another to reduce time required. To lower the in-manufacturing
time various divisions of manufacturing department are in order. The
component done for by one division goes into the next through up head cranes
reducing effectively the time required and consequently the customer serving
time. The cranes are operated by workers.

The plant was segmented according to various functions like raw material
offloading, workshop, painting, testing and other administrative departments.
The division was also made on the basis of the functionality of the pumps. So,
there were two main sections horizontal and vertical pump section. The plant
sourced prime movers like engines and motors from other vendors.
